Aunt of mine and her husband struggled to conceive for decades from what I gather but she managed to get pregnant when she was pretty much 50 or so and gave birth to twins girls. Think they got medical help with that pregnancy, though.

Interesting theory, they think that orphan boys have less reproductive success without parents than orphaned girls and that's why older parents are more likely to have daughters. Men are judged by their ability to provide and orphaned boys would have less economic vitality (less inheritance). Whereas orphaned girls are judged by their attractiveness not their economic potential.

The problem with older parents, of course, is that they are more likely to die sooner. If the parents die before the children reach sexual maturity, it will have a greater negative impact on sons’ future reproductive success than on daughters’. This may be one evolutionary, ultimate reason why older parents are more likely to have daughters. Parents may be evolutionarily designed to have more daughters when they are older, so that, when they die, they are less likely to leave sons who have not sexually matured. Being orphaned young is bad both for boys and girls, but it’s much worse for boys than for girls.

As I explain in an earlier post, parental investment is much more crucial for the future reproductive success of sons than for that of daughters. Sons’ reproductive success largely hinges on the status and resources that they inherit from their parents, particularly, their fathers. This is why the presence of sons deters divorce and the departure of the father from the family. Sons therefore need parents to invest in them, to make sure that they inherit the status and the resources of the family.

In sharp contrast, daughters’ future reproductive success is largely determined by their youth and physical attractiveness. Once they are conceived with particular genes that influence their physical attractiveness, there is very little that parents can do to increase their daughters’ future reproductive success, beyond keeping them alive and healthy. There is absolutely nothing that parents can do to affect the progression of time that determines the daughters’ age, nor is there anything they can do after the conception to influence the daughters’ physical appearance (once again, beyond keeping them healthy).

However, sex ratio is also influenced by parental hormone levels at conception. Since male testosterone decreases with age, it makes sense that older men have a higher proportion of daughters.

Environmental pollutants (e.g. dioxins, DDT) disrupt how hormones work, so can affect the sex ratio too. There are other factors which i can't be bothered to look up.

Yep, a lot of men don't know this and there are those that idiotically even divorce their wives if they only have daughters, not realising it's their DNA that is determining the outcome.

If a guy was desperate to have a son, this is what I'd advice:

1) Have a child when you're younger than 40. Also, increase your testosterone levels - via exercise, diet, lack of stress
2) Make sure you're not exposed to environmental pollutants, especially dioxins and DTT.

Ultimately though, genes will play a big part.

Sorry, I should've made clear. What I listed above was the environmental influences, what you can actually change.

The biggest influence is genetic. Some men have more X or Y in their sperm than others. This will affect the sex ratio of their children. Boys inherit this from their fathers.

So you're correct. If you're a man, and your dad and grandad had a high proportion of boys, the chances are you will too. (source)
