Silanyo under Meles’s influence

President Ahmed Mohamed Mahamoud has appointed a young officer trained in an Ethiopian military academy to head the intelligence services.

14/01/2012

Mohamed Nur Hersi did not last long at the head of the Somaliland National Intelligence Agency (NIA), a job that he took over from Hussein Hassan Guleid known as Kenyati in November 2010 (ION 1298). President Ahmed Mohamed Mohamoud known as Silanyo sacked him on 4 January, replacing him with Jama Mohamed Botan known as Cirro. The latter joined the Somaliland army in 2008, which sent him the following year on a two year training course at the Ethiopian military academy in Mekele, the capital of the Tigray Regional State. This choice is to the liking of the Ethiopian government, which had called for Mohamed Nur Hersi’s head to roll because he had refused to reply positively to Addis Ababa’s security demands.

The desire to maintain good relations with Ethiopia is also one of the factors that has led President Silanyo to forcibly convene last week his Minister to the Presidency Hersi Haji Ali Hassan for a reprimand. Indeed, Hassan has recently had a spat with the Ethiopian Consul in Hargeisa, General Berhe Tesfaye (ION 1321). Silanyo accuses him of being unprofessional in his work and of discreetly being one of the founders of the political organisation Nasiye headed by Ahmed Mohamoud Omer. Since then, the traditional leaders have tried to bring an end to this dispute between two men who are both members of the Issak/Habar Jelo clan. But to no avail so far!

What did silanyo do to you, for you to be obsessed with tarnishing him like this?

Yes, he has done some questionable things, but he was also one of the main leaders of the SNM, within his 7-year presidency Somaliland has developed significantly.

He is an old and fragile man, he should be respected at the very least.

So what Ethiopia is doing should be hidden and its influence? Every Somali should read this to learn how Ethiopia operates. Sland officers
are trained in Ethiopia so in return they can be spies for Ethiopia, nothing is free in this world.

I understand your view, lakiin the same can be said for gaas, who was blasted yesterday, and former Somali leaders.

Bashing them, even with the Siilanyo talk is disrespectful.

Nearly every Somali knows what Ethiopia is capable of, we should be looking at that, and how we can protect our sovereignty as the Somali nation, not bashing Somali leaders, as if they read this forum, it only uses them as scapegoats, rather than looking at the real problem.

Siilanyo is the worst though out of this lot. What kind of nicca sacks his intelligence officers because they wouldn't spy for another country.

Yes, but you need to understand it from his point of view. Ethiopia already has Somalia under control, and the only close ally in the region for Somaliland is Ethiopia. If we like it or not, Somaliland is not internationally recognized, so people have to do shady deals to survive. Just as Siad when he had to cancel his support for the Ogaden rebels, in exchange for securing his seat when Mengistu stopped supporting the SNM.

Finally we turned a page then if majority of the Somalilanders here agree the current politicians are just pawns for neighboring nations.
Someone once said Ethiopia doesn't need to have ground troops in Somaliland when it is embedded deep in the system and its
control reaches far.

They're not pawns. You're overestimating Ethiopia. It is still one of the world's most poorest countries, it has gotten itself into tremendous debt, there is tensions from the Oromo and Amhara, as well as the conflict in Somalia and fragile relationship with Eritrea.

I said on a different thread you posted about silanyo today that Ethiopia is Somaliland's lifeline, that is also the other way round. Djibouti, Somaliland, Kenya, Sudan(to a lesser extent) are literally the life machines of Ethiopia. There is no way on earth Ethiopia would be so successful if these nations did not allow sea access.

I know Ethiopia is third world in the greater scheme of things but it exerts huge influence over Somaliland which is what makes it more
shameful. I can understand USA, Russia etc but third world Ethiopia? There is no way to avoid that L.

To be honest I was always suspicious of those officers that are sent to Ethiopia for "training".
Most of them are stationed in Hargeisa, so what they actually do is spy on their own people
and the Gov.
