Not crying when hearing the Quran?

I've never cried or been emotional when I hear people reciting the Quran; I've seen so many people cry and get emotional when they hear it but to be honest I've never been cried or been the slightest emotional I may even take it a step further and say I'm completely unable to do so

I used to think something was wrong with me when I was younger and thought those that cried while hearing it were much more religious than I was but I don't really cry in general and it's very difficult for me to cry. I've acknowledged it and I'd say I'm pretty religious but still never cry or feeling emotional upon hearing the Quran

I understand it's value and it's wisdom and I get why a person would cry while hearing it but it's just never happened to me

Do you understand it’s meaning if not you will obviously feel nothing .

That’s why I’m embarking on a journey learning the Quran tafseer and Quran itself obviously. Also am learning the Arabic language too while I’m at it .

I'll provide my own insights tomorrow morning, it's late in my time zone and I'm too tired to think. But out of sheer curiosity, what made you want to tag me specifically?

I’ve only cried to one surah. Surah tawkir. The ayas about the baby girls being killed and that their parents/killers will be asked on the day of judgement why they baby girl was killed has me crying a lot. Especially seeing the videos of babies from the Gaza Strip.

But that was because I was reading the English translation while listening. If you don’t understand it’s normal if you don’t cry

How do people not cry when the Quran is recited? Is Allah eternal words and muslims need to appreciate it much more.

You can appreciate and value it without crying or getting emotional

People are different and as a result have different responses
Yeah I know. But at least force yourself to cry if you can of course, as you will get rewarded crying for the sake of Allah. There is even a hadith about those that cry out of fear for Allah will recieve shade in the day of judgment when their is no shade other than Allah shade.

First and foremost, the fact that you see not being able to cry when hearing the Quran as potentially problematic is a sign that you are on the right track, so I wouldn't beat myself up. I commend you for being this self-aware at 18.

Secondly, and I know I'm gonna get flamed here for the next sentence I'm about to type, but I think crying upon hearing Quran recitation is overrated. DON'T QASHIN ME YET EVERYONE! Let me explain myself.

Being able to produce tears upon hearing the message of Allah (SWT) as communicated by the Noble Quran, in my view, is largely dependent on the Muslim brother or sister's personality and temperament.

If you're the sentimental type to feel incredibly moved by fictional media and art that means something to you personally (like a well-written anime character arc that's relatable to you, for instance) and the tears come out naturally BUT when you hear the Quran recitation, you feel nothing welling up in your eyes, I would then label it as a cause of concern. It implies short-sightedness, for lack of a better descriptor (I'm no good at writing). By that I mean, it's like you need Allah (SWT) to be directly in front of you, available to your human eyesight and touch to feel connected to him in the same way you see, hear, feel, touch your most treasured art media (whatever that's been for you). Obviously, that goes in direct contrast with the fact that part of this Dunya is a test of faith, so you cannot have Him in front of you to observe with your human senses solely to feel that sentimentality, if again, that is your personality type.

I, on the other hand, am a rather emotionally muted personality, at least in terms of how its expressed externally. I feel deeply when I hear Quranic recitation, but I cannot shed a tear upon hearing it in my living room for the same reason I can't shed a tear when I listen to certain songs or certain character arcs in movies/TV shows that directly remind me of my own struggles. It's just not in me to well up with tears that coincide with how I feel on the inside, and I have accepted that. I grew up going to halaqa circles with the sisters at my nearest mosque as a teen, and I remember being looked at funny because I looked very straight-faced at the sheikh reciting while the others were tearing up to bursting into tears. I thought there was something inherently wrong with my imaan at the time but came to understand that it was moreso a function of my personality and therefore not something to feel ashamed of, since it carried onto other sentimental facets of life.

I hope my perspective is of benefit to you.

I am influenced by the verses that talk about death and resurrection, and that makes me recalculate and believe.

When reading translations with it then yes.

In addition, I think forcing yourself to cry, as others have suggested, is a Band-Aid solution. I've done it before, and it made me feel like a phony, a munafiq even.

A more sustainable solution would be to organically develop a love of the Quran overtime, and the tears will flow on their own, without the guilt for feeling like you're pretending to be something you're not. That's what happened to me, all those years ago.

You might have a more positive experience pushing yourself to feel teary-eyed though than I did though 🤷🏾‍♀️

Do you know the linguistic meaning?

Those who cry are pondering upon the meaning. No one cries when they’re hearing a beautiful voice reciting Qur’an.
