OPINION NFD should remain with Kenya

I think it’s in Somalia’s long term interest for NFD to remain with Kenya.

1. Kenya’s control of NFD is the only reason ethnic Somali’s can be considered natives in Kenyan territory.

2. The land is barren dessert and population is low. Not worth fighting for. In fact I’ve started to see a lot of Kenyans lately on Twitter, academics and normal users alike advocating for NFD to be ceded back to Somalia as it is a security risk for them.

3. Somali’s can be a significant minority in the decades to come and can be part and parcel of Kenyan society and politics. Reverse is not true, no non-Somali Kenyan ethnic group have a presence in Somalia. This arrangement could be very beneficial for Somalia.

The Sijuu are locked out of Kenya tbh.

The Kenyan sells them the dream of democracy and equal representation but the NFD was host to massacres, concentration camps and scored earth policies.

To this day, the NFD is the least developed area in Kenya, with barely any income or large scale development.

I would even argue that Garowe is a better city than Garissa, despite being in unstable Somalia.

Major highway/transport corridor being built that will go through Garissa.

KETRACO (their national grid company) will extend transmission line to Garissa by next year.

And their is a major solar plant project being undertaken in Garissa.

This has all been happening past 18 months and might be more. It’s changing rapidly.

Wow…I was actually investigating the progress of the transmission line to Garissa and it looks like KETRACO announced the completion of the project just 2 hours ago on Facebook.



This is huge news. Garissa will see a huge boon of new industries and businesses. Currently Kenya has a surplus of energy production.

NFD has transformed and become better after the fall of Afweyne govt.

From 2008 that is when Somalis in NFD were trusted after the battle between Kikuyus and all other Kenyan ethnic groups.Somalis started to be posted on powerful dockets.

Extremely unlikely. If they never had a civil war during their most delicate periods post independence I don’t see it happening now that they are developed both politically and economically. Plus their major ethnic groups are relatively evenly distributed.
