Fresh allegations of bullying have emerged in the case of a 12-year-old schoolgirl who drowned in a Lancashire river, a tragedy that has raised concerns about the treatment of refugees in British society.

Shukri Abdi, who arrived in the UK as a Somali refugee last year, died in what her family claims were mysterious circumstances in the River Irwell in Bury last month.

Since then claims have surfaced that she was repeatedly bullied with no apparent action taken by her school, prompting campaigners to claim that Muslim girls are frequently not given the care they need.

Shukri’s family has now said that the alleged targeting of the refugee became so bad at one point that a teacher decided to remove her from school in a desperate attempt to protect her. Saynab Hareed, Shukri’s aunt, said the incident occurred earlier this year and proved the school had been acutely aware of the bullying. “She was getting bullied so badly that on one occasion one of the teachers took Shukri from school to her own house because the teacher was worried for her safety,” said Hareed.

Greater Manchester Police say they are still investigating the death and have interviewed four children who were with Shukri when she died. But they say they have uncovered no evidence bullying played a part in what they have called a “tragic incident”.

The family, however, complain it is being left in the dark and has lost faith in the force. “At first the case was closed within three days and without, we felt, a proper investigation taking place. Only after the protests did they decide to look into more details,” said Hareed.

The case has already prompted a series of demonstrations around the country, acting as a lightning rod for refugee groups who believe they have less of a stake in British society. Rakhia Ismail, the mayor of Islington, north London, said the case had raised concerns once again that ethnic groups are treated differently.

“Politicians are interested in our vote, but they do not care for the Somali community. Speaking as a mother, a Muslim and a Somali, we need to get justice for this child,” said Ismail, the UK’s first Somali-born female mayor.

Caraweelo Ali, 19, a student who was among hundreds who took part in a protest for Shukri in London last week, said: “Her death and the events surrounding it show that a black Muslim girl doesn’t matter. It has made us all question how refugees are treated in the UK.”

Meanwhile, scrutiny continues over the events that led to Shukri’s drowning. The police explanation is that they have not uncovered any suspicious circumstances and that Shukri went into deep water and got into difficulty. However, the family argues that the police have not shared any details of the interviews with the four youngsters who were with Shukri at the scene of the death on 27 June.

“We have no idea who they are, anything. They’re keeping it completely private. We just want to know how did it happen?” added Hareed.

The family also has no idea what Shukri was doing between leaving school at 3:30pm until around 11pm when police received the call that she was in the river.

Hareed said Shukri had never mentioned a desire to swim, had no towel and was wearing a hijab when she went swimming.

One Bury resident, speaking where Shukri is believed to have entered the water, said: “It’s a weird place to go for a swim, as you can see there’s hardly any water, just rocks and puddles. I’ve slipped there before and scratched my knee.”

Shukri’s school, Broad Oak Sports College, says it is currently reviewing its anti-bullying policy and procedures. Despite being repeatedly asked by the Observer to comment, it had not responded at the time of publication.

Shukri’s mother made a series of verbal complaints about bullying for more than a year and Hareed, despite living in London, also made a complaint herself, because the family was so upset about the situation.

A petition calling for the local Labour MP, James Frith, to demand an investigation into whether the school failed to properly address bullying has collected more than 77,500 signatures. Elsewhere a crowdfunding effort to support Shukri’s family has reached its £10,000 target after more than 580 people donated.

Here in the UK this is getting 0 press for some reason. Most of the news is online. I watch the news with my dad regularly and it has never come up. Weird, not only cause they only show bullshit trivial things, but if this was a white person wallahi it would be breaking for weeks. Whenever a white person goes missing here, they are on the news every day, either until they are found or every single person in the UK has heard of the news. There was a black girl missing recently and there was outrage as she wasn't posted on the news channel until petitions were signed. It's annoying cause its not like the US here where are thousands of news channels that spin off a main one, here its 2 or 3 national ones, so they don't have an incentive to post. Wish there were city specific ones.

I don't see a mega difference to be honest, just that the left one has a wider face which usually isn't favored in modeling they like slim long faces like the one on the right. The forehead could be a difference but like every other hijabi, she's more likely than not packing a 5head too. Plus skin tones differ but you shouldn't see that as a problem unless you're a colorist. They're both pretty in their own right.

Happens in the US as well.

Until you get a diverse police force, minority crimes will always take a backseat to a crime against a White person. I don’t even believe it’s purposeful. The community that’s affected discusses/reacts to the crimes against it the most. You’re not discussing White missing kids at your dinner table, you’re discussing Shukri.

Somalis are generally not a good representative of the population as a whole, they only tend to care about themselves. My family is different, and is more like other families who have integrated well, where any missing person / child death is a big deal, especially in her circumstances. I go to a mostly white school and some of my friends knew before I even told them, so they're likely to share more (but now come to think of it they know I'm Somali so when they heard anything Somali related they were probably rushing to tell me lmao)

What really annoyed me was some of this social media culture, where tweets and retweets is meant to mean a solid contribution to the cause, as there was a protest in London recently, and I've never seen a protest, in Central London out of all places, so small. People block off the whole area when it comes to Palestine and stuff like that, and for Shukri there was less than 100 people, and the Department of Education didn't even take notice. Maybe because the crime wasn't in London, but the UK aint that big, and Manny would protest for us if needs be so I don't see why the epicenter of the UK didn't show out, or at least match the energy seen on twitter, where tweets hit like 40k and she was trending for a while. Some Somali guy on twitter even spoke about it, I'll see if I can find it.

It should not have been in london. It should have been in her home town. But the protest was too early as well. Its stilll being investigated. We just have to keep the pressure on. The fear the school has is legal anotbeing sued for not dealing with the bullying. In the end a violent protest may be our only choice to be taken serious

the protest was in manchester too but the family requested it to be in london aswell as the department of education, who they wanted to look into the school's negligence, is in london. if you know the uk you would know they close investigations like its nothing, the police never want to look into things, so not too much hope at present

True....but this one has not been closed. I really believe somalis will make noise if it does happen with the help of asain community.

Rip to the little girl.

Secondly, guys, this isn’t a beauty contest, but a tragic tale of discrimination and racism at its ugliest form. Start another thread comparing Somali chicks.

What I have difficulty understanding in this story is, was she killed or was she bullied and became so angry and ended her life? Is the issue bullying or murder?

She couldnt swim. There are claims she was pushed in the water by her bullies. Including one of the kids who was there said it. Other claims it was accident. Its the lack of giving answer to the family and public by the police that has frustrated people. As far now they still claim its been looked at. If this was an accident you would think tgey woukd come out and clearly state that and calm everyone down. But something is going on here for sure

this wasnt suicide in the slightest. what they're reporting is accidental death, but it should be manslaughter, as evidence keeps increasing that she was pushed in out of spite. one of the school teachers was even caught saying she believes they were playfighting and got pushed by accident. now obviously noone cares what this cracker has to say, but it shows that somalis are not deluded in believing she was pushed in and not jumped or fell as being claimed, and if a teacher that knew them can say it then there should at least be some looking into it rather than 'she fell' and case closed. also doesn't help that there were bite marks found on her, she was known to avoid unknown areas being a new refugee, she wasnt 'friends' with these people she was with, a fisherman then even said he confornted two girls who were just staring with cold eyes into the river instead of alerting authorities - this man was dismissed as being drunk, his wife said she never lets him go fishing drunk, just shows the police were trying to just call it an accident and close any investigation, the girl was known to be bullied by a lot of the girls, the ringleader was at the scene.... etc etc. I could go on, but this is why people are protesting, when the public know this much info, wait for police report, and see it say accidental death with no malpractice. its just a massive slap in the face of the family most of all

noones advocating for the arrest of 12 year old children, just the decency to let the parents know what actually happened and not leave them in limbo when they could easily investgate and some sort of justice is reached, be it the school or whatever, who failed to do anything about the bullying.
