The U.S. soldiers involved in the 2006 Abeer Qasim al-Janabi case were punished under U.S. law. Steven Dale Green received life without parole but died by suicide in 2014. James P. Barker, Paul E. Cortez, and Jesse V. Spielman got 90, 100, and 110 years, respectively, with parole eligibility after 10 years. Bryan L. Howard served 27 months for lesser charges. Anthony W. Yribe was discharged without prison time.
Iraqi reactions, especially from the Janabi tribe, were mixed, with many deeming the sentences too lenient and demanding the death penalty.
