The problem is that there is no domestic academy for Somali studies as the education system is fucked after 35+ years of civil war. Of course in that situation scholarship is going to be dominated by foreigners and expats.
what ethic group would the garre people be?Orientalism deals with how the West came to write about the civilizations of Asia and North Africa. It does not really apply to how the West came to write about Sub Saharan Africa.
Btw, it is an objective fact that Jiddu, Garre, Tunni, Dabarre, Mirifle and Maxaa Tiri speakers are different ethnic groups. I make the further argument that Maxaa Tiri speakers can also be subdivided, but that is more of an informed opinion.
Somalis with a funny languagewhat ethic group would the garre people be?
different sub sub clans of garre speak af garre. My sub sub sub clan of garre called "darawa" speak maay maay as their first language, then somali, and then af garre. So not all garre speak that language.Somalis with a funny language

garre is a confederation. Theres tuf which is a pre hawiye qabil, while quranyow garre are mahe dir paternally but they carry the garre name also. even both quranyow and tuf garres live in different places. the garres that have high admixture are tuf garres cause they live with the boran people. . So not all garres have borana admixtureYou are correct, but on the other hand most ethnicities are compromised of absorbed people. For example, Germans, only the Northwest Germans are truly German in origin, the other ones have high Celtic or Slavic origins.
Dirs, Isaaqs, and Darods are definitely the same ethnicity, even in the strictest ancient definitions. Hawiyes come from the aforementioned group, but have high admixture from those other Somali-like but not really Somali/Maxaa ethnicities (Garre, Maay, Jiddu etc etc).
