Nationalism - The hidden poison of the Ummah.

A advice that I would give is that nationalism should be avoided by all means. I think its a big problem nowadays and we fall into without knowing. We as muslims should be focusing on unity instead of divisions.
Allah says in the Qur’an:

“Indeed this Ummah of yours is one Ummah, and I am your Lord, so worship Me.”
(Surah Al-Anbiya 21:92)

And He warned:

“And hold firmly to the rope of Allah all together and do not become divided.”
(Surah Aal ‘Imran 3:103)

And even worse is the tribalism that we as somalis have between each other, Hating each other simply because that person is that tribe or this tribe. Killing and harming each other for this is low IQ. Especially as muslims.

“He is not one of us who calls to asabiyyah, or fights for asabiyyah, or dies upon
asabiyyah.”
(Abu Dawud, 5119; graded sahih by Al-Albani)

He also said:

“Leave it, for it is rotten.”
(Bukhari and Muslim)

This was said when the Muhajirun and Ansar almost fought over their group identities. The Prophet ﷺ instantly stopped them, calling it a rotten call — meaning it smells of Jahiliyyah.

Salafi scholars such as Shaykh Ibn Baz and Shaykh al-Albani clarified that modern nationalism — where people prefer their nation over the Ummah — falls under the same prohibition. Whether you call to Somali pride, Arab superiority, or Pakistani unity, the root is asabiyyah, and the Prophet ﷺ warned that it leads to destruction.

he Deen Came to Abolish Lineage Superiority

Islam erased the hierarchy of blood and tribe. The Prophet ﷺ said:

“Indeed Allah has removed from you the pride of the days of ignorance and boasting about forefathers. A person is only a pious believer or a miserable sinner. All of mankind are the children of Adam, and Adam was created from dust.”
(Abu Dawud, 5116; authenticated by Al-Albani)

In another narration:

“No Arab is superior to a non-Arab, and no non-Arab is superior to an Arab, except by taqwa.”
(Ahmad, 23489; graded hasan)

From the Salafi perspective, this hadith is a foundation — your nationality, language, and color hold no weight in Islam. Only taqwa matters. Nationalism reverses this by reintroducing pride based on race and territory.

One of the principles of Salafi creed is al-walā’ wal-barā’ — loving and hating for the sake of Allah. This principle shapes the Muslim’s loyalty.

  • Loyalty (wala’) is to Allah, His Messenger, and the believers.
  • Disavowal (bara’) is from kufr, shirk, and those who oppose Islam.

Allah says:

“You will not find a people who believe in Allah and the Last Day loving those who oppose Allah and His Messenger, even if they were their fathers, or their sons, or their brothers, or their kindred.”
(Surah Al-Mujadilah 58:22)

Nationalism twists this concept — making people love others merely because they share a nationality, even if those people mock Allah or reject Islam. It also makes them despise Muslims of other lands, which directly opposes wala’ wal-bara’.

After the fall of the Khilafah in 1924, colonial powers like Britain and France carved the Muslim lands into artificial “nations.” Instead of being one body, the Ummah was split into pieces — each given a flag, a border, and a fake sense of identity.

Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah (رحمه الله) said:

“The believers are one nation, distinct from others. The foundation of their alliance and enmity is religion, not lineage or homeland.”
(Majmu‘ al-Fatawa, 28/208)

From the Salafi view, this global breakup was not only political but ideological — it planted love for the flag instead of Tawheed. Muslims began to fight each other in the name of “patriotism,” forgetting that Allah called them one Ummah.

Once nationalism enters the heart, it breeds arrogance, racism, and division. You see people saying “Somalis first,” “Egyptians first,” or “Our country before others.” This contradicts the Qur’anic concept of Ummah Wahidah (One Community).

The Prophet ﷺ described the Ummah as:

“The believers are like one body; when one part hurts, the whole body feels the pain.”
(Bukhari and Muslim)

But nationalism turns the body into competing limbs. It makes one Muslim bleed while another watches, saying, “That’s their country, not ours.”

A Muslim’s identity is not tied to flags or passports. Islam does not recognize “Somali Islam” or “Saudi Islam.” There is only Islam.

Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen said:

“Calling to nationalism is a call to division. Islam came to unite the people upon religion, not upon tribes or countries.”
(Sharh Al-Arba‘in An-Nawawiyyah)

The Salafi da‘wah emphasizes that your wala’ should be for the Muslim wherever he is — whether he speaks your language or not. The bond of Tawheed is stronger than blood.

When nationalism spreads, the heart forgets that guidance, not geography, defines the believer. The Prophet ﷺ warned:

“Four things in my Ummah are from the affairs of Jahiliyyah that they will not abandon: pride in ancestry, slandering lineage, seeking rain by the stars, and wailing over the dead.”
(Muslim, 934)

Nationalism revives the first two: pride in ancestry and slandering others’ lineage. From a Salafi perspective, this is not a minor issue — it’s a return to pre-Islamic ignorance.

The only cure is to rebuild allegiance on Tawheed and the Sunnah. When the heart’s love and loyalty return to Allah and His Messenger ﷺ, false attachments fall away.

Allah says:

“And those who disbelieve are allies of one another. If you do not do the same (ally with the believers), there will be fitnah and great corruption in the land.”
(Surah Al-Anfal 8:73)

To the Salafi, this ayah explains our current state — Muslims divided, corrupted, and powerless because their unity is built on nationalism instead of faith.

This is why somalis are so easily exploited you cannot engage someone under different modes of action you have to meet them where they are, somalis cannot emphasise the importance of the ummah if they are too concerned with nationalism you have to build up your nations first

I will add that i dont see a native somali nationalism as being detrimental to islaam because there are no somali non muslims being allied with and you dont see somalis villifying ajaanib muslims outside of chronically online spaces like twitter or here. So it would be unlikely to pull us away from the diin. Of course this refers to a native somali nationalism not the painted over western indoctrination of independence and kacaan or the aid colony we have now but rather an effort homegrown with best interest in mind . However qabyaalad has to go i agree witht that

Somali nationalism has the intention of prosperity of the somali people at the point we are in now our walaa with other muslim nations does not mean anything except goodwill. While i believe there is still ajar for the intention of walaa with fellow muslims. It would be nice if we can actually offer some material support
