Myth Busted- The Origins of the Somali Flag

For years theirs was this theory that the Somali flag was designed by some guy called Mohamed Awale Liban, a narrative that was pushed by many without really asking too many questions.

But in truth, the Somali flag came from the Italian Somaliland colonial coat of arms which it had used as early as 1936. This is the same with Leopold coats of arms that the Italians used.


Here is the Italian-Somaliland Coat of arms from 1889-1947

The history, background, meaning and symbolism of what you're comparing however is unrelated. Those are what fundamentally makes a flag or crest or emblem. Just because something vaguely looks alike doesn't make it the same, and to suggest so is ignorant and wrong in every sense of the word.

First of all, that pic is a pic from Wikipeadia of the coast of arms. Send me an actual reliable picture of the Italian coast of arms to verify if that’s the coast of arms because wiki aint reliable.


Your looking deep into it, don’t dwell to much into conspiracy theories because you will look crazy. That’s like saying Someone looks like drake therefore he’s related to him, that’s how you sound like: a crazy conspiracy theorist.

A symbol is a physical thing that represents an abstract thing.
For any two symbols to be alike they have to represent the same meaning.


I repeat myself, two things can look similar but that doesn't make them the same thing. What you're comparing couldn't be more different as symbols. Somalias flag represents a greater vision and couldn't be more perfect as a flag due to its symbolism and history. That's why it has been regarded as one of the better national flags by professional vexillologists (flag nerds)
