My visit to Taipei: What Somalilanders can learn from Taiwan.

China claims Taiwan as its provoince, the international community does not want to contradict China on this matter. Thus, Taiwan is not a member of the United Nations. Plus, only 25 countries (as of early 2007) recognize Taiwan as an independent country and they recognize it as the "only" China. Due to this political pressure from China, Taiwan does not maintain an embassy in the United States and the United States (among most other countries) has not recognized Taiwan since January 1, 1979.

Even Puntlanders have something to learn from Taiwan as an example.

I think anyone that would want to Secede from Somalia should visit Taiwan and see what it looks like.

These people have thier own country, currency, markets, public sector, police, transportation system to move goods and people, social engineering and educational systems.

Yet, I see them as an outsider as still being Chinese.

I noticed the people in Taiwan have a different “Mindset” and it’s this mindset that is very powerful. They do things differently here, even products made in Taiwan carry a higher perceived value then those made in China. People here know they are Chinese by blood but not by brain.

The United States has not recognized them since 1979 and life pretty much goes on here for the taiwenese.

As Puntlander who has experience times of wanting to secede, I think staying in Somalia and being part of a competitive confederation systems that gives autonomy and not independence is the way forward.

I have been for and against the succession of Somaliland (sometimes fence sitting) but when you look at the reality from the international community, I think it’s safe to say that -even if every - Somali through a referendum held a vote to help landers secede, the international community may not allow it.

If you’re a lander and are pro-independence, feel free to visit Taiwan. It might change your mind.

Taiwan (Republic of China) sees themselves as representing the entirety of China. They have never officially called for independence.

But there are many things we can learn from them on how to engage with the international community.

It’s very interesting too see how it’s two countries but still China.

There’s are many things people can learn from Taiwan.

After I leave Taiwan, I will no longer talk about SL.
