Okay so my flight had the movie and I watched it. Honestly, it’s objectively not bad.
1. The main plot of the movie is North and South Korea working together in dire circumstances. Somalia is merely the backdrop nor really important to the story.
2. They definitely had Somalis working in research for this movie. Everything from the spelling of Somali in posters, to the colour of the Xamar taxis was accurate. However, they did also fumble on some easy stuff.
3. The Kacaan is portrayed as a corrupt, violent regime and the USC as a popular-backed group that are out for revenge and to cause mayhem.
4. They have no Somalis in the casting and nearly all of them speak English in the classic West African accent. Many of the actors cast do use Somali phrases with passable pronounciation.
Honestly, it isn’t as damaging as people have portrayed it to be. It’s not great for our image but it’s similar to a lot of the African conflict movies put out in recent years.
