I don’t like that subreddit but they’re correct. Somalis are the only people who fell for the no riba stuff that other muslims don’t care about. Arab & south asian sheikhs are telling somalis not to buy homes because of riba but turn a blind eye to their people doing the same thing. What is there to be proud about? Your peers and their families own their homes but you don’t? That’s shameful

With respect, we are not sheep, and we don’t have to blindly follow what others do. Who cares what those that are leading people astray say? Our lives should be dictated by the Quran and the Sunnah.

You need to have a credit card in order to get a credit history and score to be able to rent for example.

I honestly never knew how much somalis hated riba until last year.

There's a shit ton of middle and upper class Muslim Americans in Texas. No one is shunning these Arab and Asian american homeowners for using riba.
These folks aren't raising their children in the hood.

I'm honestly starting to wonder how many somalis are actually this bothered about mortgages. Are the ones causing a scene about this issue only a minority within our communities?? @Keep it a boqol @Gracias @Medeea

your in texas the majority of muslims are south asian descent they follow the hanafi school of thought. They’re rulings are more moderate and liberal compared to the hanbali and shafii rulings that’s most somalis follow knowingly or unknowingly.

Many scholars permit taking a mortgage if you’re going to live in the house. The same applies to student loans and other absolute necessities like cars (assuming you don’t already have one).

This one is exactly what i’m talking about here, they like to bring that one up to justify it along with people in the past were poor so they were more prone to suffering and doesn’t apply today when you have money and are certain to pay it off etc…

I always get asked if we used riba on our home. We didnt. We got lucky to save up enough and buy it however these same people who ask tht question have no problem cheating the system. It makes no sense.

Almost all non-home owner Somalis engage in riba in massive numbers even when they can avoid to do so. Don't fool yourself. 19.99% credit card rate, student loans, car notes for a brand new car, and business loans. Why dont they work during the year and in the summer (or take a year off) to save for tuition or do hagbad? Why dont they buy a 10 year old reliable Toyota rather than the brand new car in their government housing driveway? Why do Somalis have revolving credit card debt where they bought things they didn't need? Most Somali opposition to mortgages is not religious based but based on jealously. They do not have the financial discipline since they are materialistic and can't delay gratification to save up for a down payment so they attack Somalis who buy homes in better neighbourhoods thinking about their childrens' future. I know it's based on jealously because I know countless Somali families who said the same thing only to buy a home in the last 5-10 years with their grown children paying the bills now.
