That would be a propaganda win for Somalia's enemies. The government needs to dig in its heels and purge the enemies from within. AS barely has any military victories against the SFG where they only captured leego & bariire but somehow are allowed to cause havoc unimpeded in the capital.
Somalia will not defeat an insurgency as strong as Alshabab in the foreseeable future. Somalis do not seem to understand the timescales we are talking about here. Alshabab may be active for the next 30 years. Columbia, Burma and Afghanistan are good examples of this. You are sorely mistaken if you think that Alshabab will be defeated militarily in the next decade.
The civil war in Somalia entered an ideological phase in 2006 with the rise of the UIC. This is no longer about clans fighting for turf, no one commits suicide for his clan. The time to build an SNA was when Abdullahi Yusuf was elected in 2004. The people of Mogadishu fought him and brought religion into what was until then a clan conflict. The UIC created by Reer Mogadishu changed everything. Ask the average man in Mogadishu today what he thinks of the UIC and he will praise it, yet these are the same forces that gave rise to Alshabab! Somalis do not understand cause and effect.
What I am trying to say is that we have to come to grips with the
possibility that this insurgency maybe a permanent feature of Somalia.
