Somalia's GDP was said to be $12.49 Billion according to the IMF as of 2024. What would you predict it to be? Informal economy included would be much closer to at least $30 billion in my opinion.I wonder how big Somalia's shadow economy is, and accounting for livestock. 2-3x bigger?

Ethiopia cooks up fake numbers to secure more loans. Take those numbers with a grain of salt. Their real gdp might be as low as 70-80 billion. And Ethiopia 272 billion

chinese capital seems much more expensive these days, late aughts to 2016 seemed like a golden era for african urban development. we missed out on that sadly . also somalis just dont trust chinese engineering. ironically the chinese roads built during kacaan lasted longer than the italian built ones but that was before the chinese lowered the bar for their own industriesThis surge is probably due to the ending of north-south traffic by the war in Sool. This gain is probably all container traffic that used to go to Ber
A deal with some Chinese construction SOE to give the largest cities a facelift could be a very investment. Building sidewalks, installing streetlights, building trash incinerators, creating a beach walk in Mogadishu, Kismayo & Bosaso, planting palm trees, etc…
Appearences matter. Compare the dingy Accra & Lagos to Nairobi and Addis. West African countries that are better off than East African states have in comparison terrible looking large cities. I’m sure that this effects FDI.

it looks like local companies such as buruuj and turks will own the urban construction scene. turkish engineering is reliable but they arent as quick and cheap as chinese. a good middle ground is leaving the boring mundane shit to the lowest bidder and the towers and flashy projects to the turks or anyone not chinese. parks and greenspace should be left to the government so they can milk some environmentalism PR
generally partnering with india on development and trade is a very good idea all around, but that would bring with it the issue of having a lot more indians in the country. can you trust somalis/indians to not be xaasid to each other?? whatever that future brings is objectively better than the current situation either wayIt may be a good idea to bring in Indian construction companies. They are surprisingly efficient and quite cheap, best example imo os that road construction costs in India are still below $1 million per km!
Somali local construction is incredibly expensive and the quality is abysmal outside of a few projects in Xamar or Hargaysa. The opportunities for monopoly in the construction market in Somalia are huge if you have capital and understand the particular market in question. There is a guy in Galkayo who does rebar work for most of the city with a crew of desis, never out of work. It’s just that the market/demand is so small it does not attract the best Somali businessmen let alone foreign ones.
Turks have low costs by western standards but they are expensive by 3rd world standards. The quality is very good though.
