MIT Study “Your Brain on Chatgpt” Finds That Users Have lower Cognitive Engagement and Memory Retention

TLDR: the study tested participatents using Chatgpt to write and solve problems and found reliance on it leads to lower brain activity espcially memory, creativity, decision making. They also found relying on AI too early creates “cognitive offloading” and weakens thinking overtime. They recommend to always think first then use Chatgpt to refine.

IMO: If you’re a teen, a parent or adult, avoid the heavy reliance of LLMs for yourself and kids. Always think and brainstorm and draft finalized problems for yourself and use LLMS to check work and make sure things are refined to get the most out of the software and for your cognitive health.

This is one of the first studies of LLMS on the human brain. We’ll see more long term cases especially for children developing.

Yeah they’re cooked. I have a friend who’s a teacher. These YNs immediately just use their phone when doing homework they don’t even attempt to problem solve.

I remember when i was in secondary school some kids would use their smart phones and use google to a lesser extent. It’s getting exponentially worse.

I would say the stem fields could face this problem exponentially but the humanities fields are heavily pushing back against Ai. Some universities make you do final essays and reverted back to pencil and paper. I even had a final like that and although it’s draining it helps the brain retain and absorb more information. The only benefits for AI is studying and feedback
