Honestly, living here is legtimately scaring me at this point… So many young boys here have died from gun violence this year (including my own brother), and in the past three days there were two more teenage boys that were shot dead this MONTH. I cant even count how many burials i've attended. If anyone else here is from this accursed state, can we hypothesize on WHAT is GOING ON? Its getting scary and it seems like people are just getting used to it.. how many more mothers have to cry?

I’m still confused on how younger kids are getting their hands on guns. I’m guessing it has to do with associations with those who know others that have guns and they supply them to these kids. Also, I’ve noticed a trend that started up in recent years where (in the summer especially) troublemakers from the city would come down and cause problems around where Somali people live (since they be knowing some Somali kids or other kids in the neighborhoods).
It got so bad that they removed the hoops from a court near my home so they could deter people from playing there due to a shooting (mind you this is a little kids playground). They even chopped down all the trees lining the road next to the park so there’s better visual of who’s in the park.

Somali parents need to prioritize buying homes and moving to the burbs. If you grow up in some of these neighborhoods thinking you are good you will be affected by this. I don’t care if you need to take riba and if you disagree you are retarded. You will end up as a 60 year old with a 25 year old hoodlum living in your house if they aren’t killed first. And don’t come at me with ‘I made it out the hood and my parent didn’t take riba’. Good for u.

Our diaspora consists of fobs, first gen, and second gen Somalis. All of us won’t share the same upbringing. Somali street niggas have always existed since we’ve arrived.Most of them were always fobs and first gen that weren’t raised properly here in the west.
Its gotten much better than it was before. I know of personally or through friends of like 30 Somalis who died of gun violence growing up. Now, I barely see or hear of any in that lifestyle. The Minneapolis Somali community isn't that old and established though so its probably different there. Itll get better soon.

Parenting has gotten better that’s why. Plenty of young gen Z Somali kids had parents that lived in the states for over a decade before having children.

Gun violence is a general American problem people die from it everyday. There is no state that is immune to it.

In some cases, with effort in reversing the intergenerational cycle, yes, but most of the good parents have good parents themselves. There are amazing parents in Somalia and shitty parents who were born and raised here. People generally dont change in how they were brought up. I think what is saving the Somali community in the future is alot of the people (second generation and higher) society does not want as parents are not having kids anyway.

I don’t really think it’s the parents. A lot of them are working hard trying to do the best they can. Contrary to popular opinion, Somali parents are strict about education and religion regardless of gender. So, what is the problem. I think it’s outside of the home. Most of the people, that murder these teenage boys are around the same social circle. When a person has argument, I think boys are affected more because they feel the need to protect their honor and pride among other boys. Something about not being a b****. Therefore, I believe they threatened each other with violence so that they can posture about toughness. Social media can exaggerate this too. Sometimes, these young boys flex guns to make themselves look tough.
Why do I think this? because I think boys who are usually alone or are too busy don’t really have this issue.
Young men throughout history has had these problems. So, what do people usually do in the past? They put them in the military to fight wars which is bad in my opinion or make them busy with jobs like around FDRs time period.
Which is why I believe you should separate these teenage boys by making them busy with afterschool activities, jobs, or some other programs so that they would be too busy to be hanging out with these groups of bored young boys who have nothing else to do except posture with each other.
