There are plenty of hierarchy-climbing liberals/centrists from upper-middle class and upperclass who present themselves as cosmopolitan but hold quite innate racist thinking, though they might not perceive themselves as racist.
I have met many of them (if you're a popular African you will encounter them in school, work, etc). They're friends but not really. It's a mixture of envy, hate, contempt, and a kind of love that is tertiary. But they have a class-based racial thinking underneath all the performative behavior. You see them becoming more "white" when they grow older and do it as a form of protecting their status.
I met one of them, a middle school classmate I used to ski with, along with actual close friends. We met at a party, greeted. Then randomly asked me if I was a drug dealer. I checked him on the spot and made him walk away with shame and utter emasculation. His piece of shit father did not teach him manners, thinking he could disrespect me like that to my face, projecting the notion that I had to do drug dealing to be having my life rolling. I told him that if it were any other guy, he would walk away. It did not matter to me that he was a charming ass moteherfucker.
A person's currency is worthless if they can't have respect. The piece of shit did not even apologize. He denied first, then I put pressure on him, signalling, I played no games, he read my vibe that he was on a thin line, so he just conceded but only said, "Ah, you're right. Yeah" - then walked away with his head down, exiting the entire party like a .I held him at no value, really; I only had to show example from the disrespect, stepping up to my face with a smirk and utter audacity.
Needless to say, these "non-racists" can be very racist, especially if you try to achieve in the West. However, their ways are very distinct from the overt idiotic racists.
