The Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries in collaboration with the ministry of Agriculture today constituted a two day meeting in the capital Hargeisa.
The quarterly meeting was scheduled to discuss how to increase food production in the country and the coordination of the production sector.
The assistant minister of Livestock and fisheries today led stake holders from the ministry of agriculture and UN’s world Food Agricultural organisation in a conference held in the capital Hargeisa.
The stakeholders meeting was meant to be an avenue for discussion of Somaliland’s food production capability and how to increase the country’s food security.
The stakeholders quarterly meeting focused on the coordination of the production sector in the country.
Last year Severe lack of rain worsened the drought in parts of Somaliland leaving 725,000 people at risk of hunger and in need of humanitarian support.
The assistant minister of Livestock and fisheries Yurub Abdi emphasizeed on the need for Somaliland to be food secure. She said imported food substances are sometimes not healthy.
Food production is low in Somaliland which has a population of close to 4 million.
UN’s world Food Agricultural organisation representative at the meeting stressed FAO’s commitment to support the government and non government organisations.
Stakeholders at the meeting intend to make locally produced improved and certified seeds available to farmers. they believe this will reduce dependency on imports and respond to both the demand of the agriculture sector and emergency situations.
