As someone who has been previously critical of some aspects of Salafist thinking, what MBS is doing is not for the greater good of Islam in Saudi Arabia.

The core Aqidah of Salafism such as an adherence to Sunnah, Hadith Traditions and the Quran is not a distortion of Islam. If anything, it is puritanical in aim. Their association with Takfirism, fealty to corrupt rulers and Sectarianism is however controversial to say the least.

The misguided belief that they exported a corrupt version of Islam or Jihadism to the rest of the Muslim World is misguided. If you have an issue with certain non-controversial aspects of Salafism shared with other mainstream Sunni schools of thought, then you probably have an issue with Orthodox Islam as practised by the Prophet SAWS and Sahabah.

I say that mawlid is bid'ah, worshipping saints is haraam, I respect Sheikh Ibn Baz, Sheikh Uthaymeen, Sheikh Ibn Taymiyyahm, etc. So if MBS does such-and-such, does that change whether mawlid is bid'ah or not?

It is a very weak argument against people who believe in Salafiyyah. Whether Salafiyyah is true or not is independent of whatever the Saudi government is up to this week just as whether Sufism is correct or not isn't based on whatever it was the Ottomans were up to.

I've said things like mawlid is bid'ah. I haven't said anything promoting MBS. I don't pay attention to what the Saudi government is up to because it doesn't really make a difference to me. Whether Sheikh Uthaymeen was a great scholar or not is independent of whatever it is the Saudi government is up to.

or for example... just to elaborate. I've been reading one of the books by Sheikh Madkhali lately. He put out a fatwa that suicide bombing is haraam and showed how it goes against Quran and sunnah. So... if MBS is up to such and such- does that ruling now change? What specific aspects of Islam are based on what such and such government is up to? No aspects of Islam change- the religion remains the exact same because it's based on Quran and Sunnah, not based on whatever it is some particular government is doing.
