Maternal Qabiil

Thank you for clarifying! I did see him listing his maternal lineage. I think a dual qabiil system is reasonable. The males can take the fathers qabiil and acknowledge the mothers and the females can take the mothers qabiils and acknowledge the fathers. This way its fair for both males and females and its also a 2 way system. Both parties names also do not get lost in history and its a good way to preserve both lines.
In Islam we take our Fathers name and tribe yes. However I think we should create a system where we acknowledge our maternal side as well.

ill start with mine:

i only know 4 generations unfortunately and will continue to teach my daughters theirs until it becomes a tradition. With enough traction, we will gain our power back though family names and hopefully create new educated patrilineal tribes via our sons

Definitely. I only know up until my great-grandmother, which is embarrassing. Maternal qabil is a good idea. Somali people hold their reer abtis in high regard, we might as well give it recognition.

Its not embarassing abayo. Its just that all of us somali women are all victims of this patriarchal caste system that was forcefully bestowed upon us. A system whereby they use Islam to continue to harm people and commit atrocities and war crimes using their fathers name

whats the point of having a tribe when if we get married to a man, our children that we have carried in hardship for 9 months doesnt carry our name and also doesnt carry our lineage. We are basically “lost” to history. How many women of our line that have done amazing things have been lost due to oppression? Its crazy how these men try to silence us

Exactly and even the little recognition we have which is Reer abti is still named after a man. Why couldn’t it be called reer hooyo instead.

Yeah, this never sat right with me. It’s almost like our only role is to be a vessel to continue a man’s clan lineage. You give birth to a child, and there’s no acknowledgment of your own lineage. It’s sad.

To make it worse, our women back home constantly advocate for tribe and tribilism knowing damn well the effects of it. When our beloved Luul Abdiaziz unfortunately died (AUN), her death was a shock but ultimately was turned into subtle clan fkd for both sides. How many women have gone through this whose cases were unknown throughout history? Instead of it coming to light in the government sphere, it was up to these patriarchal tribes to decide the fate of the oppressor when he shouldve been executed straight away. Its so sad wallahi.

the word reer abti is disgusting. Even the word landheere is a symbolically masculine word with lan = branch and dheere = long
