Mohamed Siad Barre did literally the opposite what a tyrannical leader should do. Man ramped up the militarisation of Somalia to the point we had one of the best armies on the continent. The military was full of non-darood soldiers and high ranking generals. These folks then got good fighting experience in the 1977 war. Then MSB had the bright idea to oppress these groups. We see how that turned out.

He is the epitome of 68 iq. You do not empower groups who can challenge your rule. What he should have done, is control the country financially and have the all the key military equipment on the hand of trusted men. Even though the elite group with the most weapons was from his own clan, that didn’t help in the end.

He could have been Jomo Kenyatta of Somalia. Plunder but develop the country, give the keys to a allied group for a while until power returns to your son.

Somalia had exceptionally shortsighted dictator. Man obviously did not know how to play the game.

Siad barre’s problem was he was thinking like a soldier even as a president he still had that soldier mentality same thing with AY in 2004 and not as a politician. He also should have not done a coup, his mistake was allying with Soviet Union and not having enough Allies, also invading Ethiopia too. He should have just waited out his military career retire, then run for president.

He also relied too much on MOD alliance the same OG he empowered were the ones that stabbed him in the back aka spm rebels. He also wasn’t willing to bribe people everything was xoog.

if he had done what the sudan army does like putting all his military friends and foes in power he would be fine like a security council.

in a country like Somalia dictatorship doesn’t work Somalis as a whole are violent and will just use that to achieve anything they want.
