In the Spring of 1992 in it’s campaign to seize control of the cities in eastern Ethiopia, the EPRDF (Ethiopian Peoples Revolutionary Democratic Front) moved on the IFLO (Islamic Front for the Liberation of Oromia) headquarters in Dire Dhawa town. The headquarters, situated on a busy intersection in the Gazira district, had been built by Haile Selassie as a gift to his son during his reign.
The EPRDF launched a surprise attack at sunset with a large force accompanied by heavy Armour, besieging the building from all sides. The strategy was simple. Show up with an impressive force, and arrest the bandits. By that time the IFLO had pulled out of the cities and back to their bases in the countryside which were more defensible. As for the men in the compound, there was nothing they can do but surrender. But they wouldn't come out. Repeated calls were made, offering amnesty for those who would surrender. The response was gunfire and rpg shells from the compound. The compound was pounded by t-55/54 tanks, and machine gun fire. The fighting had continued throughout the night and the next day uninterrupted. The district was closed down and for days nothing moved in Gazira except vehicles taking away the killed & wounded and carrying supplies to the front. After 3 days of seige and bombardment, the compound fell. When the EPRDF was able to enter the heavily damaged building, except for one wounded, all of the fighters had been killed. There were no more than half a dozen men in the compound.
Some ask why did they not leave the compound after their front had pulled out? Why did they stay behind by themselves? Why? Why oh why?
