They were separated because of geography. Ajuuran was based on the Shabelle and Juba valleys, whilst Adal was based in the highlands of Ethiopia/Somalia.

Between them is 1000km of semi-arid grasslands inhabited by nomads.

Logistically, it’s not possible for them to unite.

Didn’t Imam Ahmad set up a new capital in the Highlands?

And Hijaz and Sudan would've definitely been taken up by Adal by the end of the century or early 1600s. Especially with the Europeans to the west and the Safavids to the east.
