Growing up in a western society with Somali immigrant parents things were never easy. I always felt they had their traditional views on life which was not aligned with modern ways growing up. I had a strained relationship with them especially in my teenage yrs.
Now much older I have a great relationship with them. Both are living in the motherland and we regularly share WhatsApp voice notes as well as the odd phone call - and we chat for hrs about life and small talk. It's like having a really good friend who wants nothing but the best for you who also happens to be Hooyo or Aabo.
They respect that I'm a fully grown adult who can make my own decisions in life good or bad. Fully responsible for the consequences. And I respect their life experience and wisdom that comes with raising a family and age. It's a blessing ❤
