I think you should guard them from and illicit content in young age, and then have a sextalk around puberty.

My parents refused to sign the slip for the school maturation program, but my mom sat me down and my dad said some things and lectured me here and there, and mom once again when I got my period, afterwhich she scheduled me in for my first OBGYN visit as my cramps were debilitating. Fortunately, nowadays the internet can be a good resource for kids who don't get the bare minimum, but it's a double-edged sword, with bad info and becoming a teacher to prepubescent children.
