Let’s discuss apartments...

I have something nagging at me that I want to discuss and believe me that I am mainly talking about myself here.

I don’t understand why we are focusing on building apartment buildings or high rises back home.

Hear me out.

Apartments and high-rise office buildings should be built in areas of population density or lack of space. Look at Somalia, do you think lack of space is our major problem.

Why do we see “big skyline” as a marker for development?

Many nations would kill to have the amount of open space Somalia has for urban sprawl.

Also, bigger buildings = bigger parking spaces. I have seen not one multi-level parking building in any of the major Somali cities. Where are people supposed to park?!?

Okay, rant over.

Rant not over.

Most of these buildings are built for diaspora. Their pricing is out of reach for many Somalis back home.

My question is what diaspora Somali is so vain as to buy an apartment back home when they can either build a house or buy one that they can renovate!!!

I am mainly talking about myself here. I have caught myself too many times being excited about apartment buildings back home or big buildings.

I hope people can see where I’m coming from with this. I’m not trying to target anyone here.

:samwelcome:

These apartments should be converted into offices. No Somali should be living in an apartment, it doesn't make sense.

In Mogadishu, after the civil war, people just took land and built sheds wherever they wanted and now they think there is a lack of space. There is no lack of space, there is corruption and too many tin sheds built where they shouldn't have been built.

Anyway, I hope other regions in Somalia don't make the same mistake and make actual town plans.

Even high rise offices is too much.

Let there be low-rise offices with plenty of open spaces for rest and recuperation during breaks.

People can take their work outside or socialise in the sun during their lunch breaks.

Working in a cubicle in a high rise building is depressing.

I guess apartments in the capital wouldn't be a bad idea for the predicted population explosion. I doubt anyone's planning for anything though

Mixed use medium density housing would be ideal; the single-family housing obsession we see in Anglo-Saxon Countries is not just inefficient, it's unhealthy.

The high infrastructure costs associated with low density development is well documented; more roads would be required and the pipes would necessarily have to travel longer distances with a spread out population.

Medium density housing

Suburban sprawl is comparatively terrible
