Yesterday, I was with my Lebanese friend and she was telling me that as a Lebanese girl if she marries out her children and her husband will never ever become Lebanese and they will not be able to own land or even be able to open a business without a Lebanese sponsor. She said it’s not fair because many Lebanese men marry white woman/ foreigners and they get citizenship and rights after 1 year but she can’t pass it on. She said many women have tried to advocate for it but it has not been successful as Lebanese Government ruled out any possibility of that changing.
It got me thinking that Somalia is the exact same, Somali Woman aren’t able to pass on citizenship or the Somali identity to their children if they have non-Somali children nor will their foreign spouse ever be eligible for Citizenship. it’s not only Somalia but basically every other Arab Country. Should Somalia remain this way as it prepares to introduce the Somali ID card? As in The only way to be Somali is through your father..?
