Was the Kushitic Empire in what is now Modern Sudan Cushites or Nilo-Sahrans? The Ancient Egyptians depicted them as Nilotic but when the Axum empire invaded them, they described the locals as "red skinned" and said that they resembled residents of Axum.

The Kingdom of Kush is a continuation of the Kerma Culture, and that culture was a Cushitic one. The Nilo Saharan-speaking peoples came and mixed with the Cushitic speakers, I guess.

The people from the Kindom of Kush spoke the Meroitic language. The classification of the Meroitic language was uncertain due to the scarcity of data and difficulty in interpreting it. Some linguist claims it's Nilo-Saharan, others say Afro-Asiatic.

"According to Peter Behrens (1981) and Marianne Bechaus-Gerst (2000), linguistic evidence indicates that the Kerma peoples spoke Afroasiatic languages of the Cushitic branch.[14][15] The Nilo-Saharan Nobiin language today contains a number of key pastoralism related loanwords that are of proto-Highland East Cushitic origin, including the terms for sheep/goatskin, hen/cock, livestock enclosure, butter and milk. This in turn suggests that the Kerma population — which, along with the C-Group Culture, inhabited the Nile Valley immediately before the arrival of the first Nubian speakers — spoke Afroasiatic languages.[14]"

they where cushites

in kherma they spoke cushitic languages,

in kush kingdom we dont know what meroitic is some say cushitic others say nilo saharan

most likely the kingdom of cush spoke cushitic like kherma and looked like somalis and ethiopians they then got invaded by ethiopians who described them to be red and dark brown like them

nubians came much later after the fall of aksum and their they found and invaded the region and cultrally influenced the cushites to create nubians

the only cushties left are beja, nubians are mostly cushitic and are clusterd geneticly to ethiopians and somalis though

yes unfortunately @Timo Madow and proud

they dont concider themselves as close to nilotes in anyway
nubians dont identify with nilotes more with east africa especially eritrea and ethiopia
today the nubians might refer to themselves as Sudanese cushitic including beja or nilo cushitic

never exclusively nilote

the nubians came long after the kingodm of kush fell at the hands of the ethiopians who described them as reddish brown like them who where cushites

nabatae came and killed of the cushites eventually overunning the region their they introduced their language and the region became christian after a while

they got invaded by arabs

kush was definatley cushitic as was kherma after ethiopians burned it to the ground nilotics invaded and formed the nobatae kingdom

today nubians are still mostly cushitic genetically and cultrally speaking close to neighboring bejas but are linguistically nilotic

and idenitfy as either sudanese cushitic or nilo_cushitic

The Meroitic Language has not been successfully and convincingly identified with any other language family, though much of this is due to the fact that the language is not very well understood.

While the script has been decyphered, the language itself has not been entirely translated so any identification is speculative.

meroitic is most likely cushitic mixed with egyptian
this is after kherma got conquerd by egypt, and the khermans where cushitic speakers it might have even been cushitic

kush later seperated from egypt to form an independent kingdom then got invaded by ethiopia

long after the nobatae nubians invaded the region who introduced the nubian languages this was long after the kherma kush egypt and aksum

Egyptian influence is expected and there is a theory connecting it to Beja languages, but these are theories only, the Meroitic language is like the Minoan language, despite there being lots of inscriptions no one can translate them enough to come to any firm conclusions.

ive heard people connecting the languages to eastern sudanic languages and nilo saharan
we know thats ridiculous becouse those languages did not arrive untill, after the fall of kush and meroe

so the meroens and kushites where not nilosharan speakers just either cushitic speakers like their
kherman ancestors or switched to speaking some form of egyptian

most likely meroetic could've been an egyptian creole or just a form of egyptian
