”From the category of nicknames .. the saying of the prophet Mohammed pbuh….. ”I was sent to the black and the red” , it is intended to mean to the Arabs and the the non Arabs . The nickname for Arabs is black and for the non Arabs is red. And the Arabs call the non Arabs red because a pale white complexion is predominant amongst them.”

من باب الكنايات قوله ..: بعث إلى الاسود و الأحمر ، يريد ، إلى العرب و العجم ، فكنى عن العرب بالسود و عن العجم بالحمر، و العرب تسمى العجمي احمر لأن الشقرة أغلب عليه

Abu Ubaid Al Qaasim Ibn Salaam said in his book Ghareeb Al Hadeeth, Chapter 3 page 484

” The most prominent colours amongst the Arabs is Asmar and udmah and the most prominent colours amongst the non Arabs is white and red (pale white) .”

يقول أبو عبيد القاسم بن سلام رحمه الله في كتابه غريب الحديث ج ٣ ص ٤٨٤
” الغالب على ألوان العرب السمرة والأدمة ، والغالب على ألوان العجم البياض والحمرة “

Ibn Duraid Al Azdi said in his book Jamhoorat Al Lughghah Chapter 2 page 650

” And it is said, ” it is not hidden that the meaning of the red and the black , and so the blacks are the Arabs because Al Sumarah is in them in abundance and the red means the non Arab because Al Shaqarah is in them in abundance.

قال ابن دريد رحمه الله في كتابه جمهرة اللغة ج ٢ ص ٦٥٠

وَيُقَال مَا يخفى ذَلِك على الْأَحْمَر وَالْأسود فالأسود الْعَرَب،لِأَن السُّمرة فيهم أَكثر والأحمر الْعَجم لِأَن الشُّقرة فيهم أَكثر

This is Abyad and what Whiteness meant for the Original Arabs and was rare complexion and not average complexion. They were olive skinned people on average. Some Sahabas like Zaid IBn Harith and Usama were described as darker, but on average, they were the same complexion as modern Arabs.

I’m very aware of the Arab phenotype. I’ve lived in the Middle East. I’ve seen ones who look Dravidian and ones who are a very tanned brown color and ones who are the standard olive complexion. Khaleejis on average are a lot darker than Shamis. The Sahabas and the Prophet s.a.w looked like their people.
