Go to any Somali restaurant in the west and the vast majority of the menu are unheard of dishes in Somalia. Somali food in the west is like Chinese food at an All You Can Eat or take out. No one in China knows what General Tso, Ginger Beef, Lemon Chicken, or Onion Rings are. Just like no one in Somalia knows what BBQ Chicken, Chicken Suqaar, Beef Suqaar, Fish Wrap, and Baasto Alfreedo are. Chicken and beef are not locally eaten meats except by diaspora but they are the most eaten meat by Somalis in the west.
There are many chicken restaurants in Muqdisho now. Also, people adapt their foods to the places they migrate to and the prices of meat etc. Somalia has an abundance of goats and sheep, so there is no need to eat beef like that. Chicken meat spreads with globalisation. What makes the food unique is the spices people use and style of cooking/marinated. Chicken Suqaar is a Somali dish because of the spices and how it is grilled similar to other similar dishes.

It’s like when some people say Somali rice is essentially a copy of Yemeni, but anyone that’s had Yemeni food rice will tell you it has a different taste to Somali rice n meat. IMO Somali rice tastes better. I think Indian rice is probably better than some Arab rice dishes.

Indian food is slept on. I prefer it over arab dishes. Those niggas struck gold with biryani. The food has a lot of flavours and spices

Naaaah I know we have similarities with our neighbours but fully claiming our clothes and now our food by this time next decade we will have nothing 😭😭😭
Somalis don't even naturally have any similarities with Kenyans lol since most Kenyans are Niger-Congo Bantus (Kikuyus) they got their stuff from Swahilis who in turn got their stuff from Persians and Gulf Arabs. Our culture is ours uniquely

Also adding this here so I don't double post: Kenya isn't part of the Horn of Africa, idk why so many Somalis think this, Kenya along with Uganda and Tanzania, form the Great Lakes Region which is directly south of the Horn

What food styles did Swahil get from Persians? Indian cuisine probably influenced Swahili more than Persian. I wouldn’t eat Swahili foods and think “gosh, this just like Arab or Persian” food. Those fish dishes and other staples found along the East African coast are unique to them. If they burrowed a few elements, it is normal just like how Somalis have bajiye, xalwa and sambusa (obv Somali takes on mid east dishes). Arabs and Persians also burrowed from Indians such Mendi and Chai

Have a look at what Ibn Batuta description of what people were eating in Muqdisho in the middle ages; it shows you sub regions of east Africa had their diets and cooking styles. What was being eaten in Muqdisho is actually more similar to Swahili and African foods than Middle Eastern dishes:

“The food of these people is rice topped with butter (gee) and a sauce containing meat, chicken, fish and vegetables served on a large wooden dish. They also serve unripe banana cooked in milk and serve it as a sauce. Sour milk with pickled lemon, bunches of pickled chilies with vinegar and salt, green ginger, and mangoes which look like apples but have a nut inside. Ripe mangoes are very sweet and are eaten like fruit, but unripe mangoes are as acid as lemons, and are cooked in vinegar. When the Mogadishu people have taken a mouthful of rice, they take some of these pickles”.

Swahili coastal cities would have developed their own unique food style just like Muqdisho, as the Persian and Indian migrants were never enough to completely dominate Swahili food culture. Swahilis have influenced Omani, too, so it goes both ways.

Swahili Ramadan food is actually a banger btw.

Yeah Indian and South Asian food is slept on. Arabs got the Mendi dishes from them. The thing with them is that for every elite food, they have a dish which resembles xaar. 🤣

I like a good Jamaican jerk chicken. I think Jamaican food is better and more well presented than West African food.

They say it’s the same as pilaf
LMAO, no, it isn't. Somali rice is more flavourful, with hints of citrus and spices, and has a lot more kick. It can be eaten by itself or with maraq/suqaar, pilau is plain, if anything our rice dishes are closer to biryani in flavour context.
