There are many poor, unemployed Somali Kenyan women who want to be housemaids. Somali homeowners are hard on money and don't want to pay them a little bit more than they would pay other Kenyan housemaids. Usually, non-Somali housemaids are paid roughly half of what a Somali housemaid would demand.

Second, how you treat your housemaid comes into the picture. You can't treat your housemaid inhumanely. But sadly, some Somalis really mistreat those poor housemaids. This is where some of them can resent you and set you up for criminals.

Third, try to know your maid. If you suspect she is a difficult person or you can sense she may harm you, fire her immediately.

Finally, Somalis in Kenya lack the concept of checking references. It is better to have at least someone who knows the housemaid that you're hiring, and make sure she can be traced quickly in case she does something stupid and dangerous as the one in the video.
