Jigjiga to overtake Mogadishu’s economy

Jigjiga, Somali Region is making some serious development - not sure if it’s due to President Cagjar taking advantage of the turmoil in Ethiopia or external investments from China.

It’s clear to see that there’s very fast developments happening in Western Somalia. With Somaliland’s governance deteriorating it could well and truly be that Somali Region/Ogaden will soon gain Independence from Ethiopia or better yet join with their fellow brethren’s Somalia as a whole. Not long left.

Mogadishu should implement a Banadiir State and improve their infrastructure or we could see them being overtaken economically by Mustafa Cagjar’s excellent governance.

Questions to relocate the capital to another city will soon come into place if Hassan Sheikh Mohamud doesn’t act swiftly.

Beautiful photo of the latest new finalised developments in the square of Jigjiga.

Jijiga can't overtake Mogadishu. Many Somali towns have more potential than Jijiga by virtue of being on the coast but they are badly governed.

I think DDS gets handed a budget of 200 million. That’s around half what Xamar raises in tax.

There’s not really any comparison but like @repo says coastal cities have way more potential

Xamar is financial capital, political capital, biggest population Somali city, coastal while it has everything it needs to feed itself right next door. Blessed really

For all those reasons it’ll be the richest

Goverment needs to promote and invest in farming in both Afgooye and Balcad districts to make sure the capital region is locally fed and more than capable of feeding its growing population

There is no city in Somalia more developed then JigJiga. Somali Regions economy grows faster then Ethiopia even before the Tigray or Amhara wars.

Do you ever speak the truth :gucciwhat:

The budget is ~700 million and unlike Somalia this isnt all wasted due to insecurity anymore which is why Somali Region actually progresses with infrastructure and services. Somalia likely also loses way more to corruption.

The cherry on top being Somalia doesn’t actually spend the amount in its budget because its accounting for aid which isnt always actualized. SR/JigJiga is most definitely surpassing Xamar.

People don’t realize the potential Jigjiga has to become the top Somali city given its current growth. 30 years ago, it’s was just a town and barely any development worthy of its name happened in Jigjiga/SR until around 2010 due to the Ethiopian gov’t negligence and terrible policies. The last 10 years is when it actually began to take off.

As long as Ethiopia removes remaining commie-era barriers and liberalize its economy, it attract and accelerate investments and thus continue growing Jigjiga at a high rate.

The fed/reg’l gov’t has also realized the strategic location of the city which is why they’ve invested heavily in infrastructure, with Harar/Dir Dhaba nearby to west, Djibouti to north, Boorame/Hargeysa/Berbera to east, Qabri Dahare/Dhagax Buur/Gode/etc. to south. And through Dir Dhaba have easy access to Addis and Djibouti with new railways.

I’m very optimistic about Jigjiga’s future and it will soon prosper and surpass many Somali cities.

Jigjiga is a fine city on the rise, much better now than when I first visited in 2018. I wish there no bloody Xabasha. So is Xamar, and I wish there were no bloody African soldiers.

Postscript:

Context: .So Fed. gov't annual budget in 2023, as forecast was 977 million $.

a) Revenue (in $ million): 283
(this is shockingly pittance, albeit was 229 in 2021, and 248 in 2022).

b) Donor funds (in $ million): 667
(this is disproportionately high, albeit was 147 in 2021, and 308 in 2022; how long could it continue?). Technically, it is a nation in the ICU.

How much of this is apportioned for Xamar?
