Only Tokugawa Japan was any special and that is because of the unprecedented peace they had. Before that, Japan was full of feuding warlords that terrorized the populace.

If we defeated al shabaab, unified the country, imposed taxes, nationalized resources, established a universal healthcare and education system, that would make us better than pretty much every other sub saharam country.

Leaders back home aren't idiots, they know exactly how to fix the country they just don't want to cause they alone benefit from the current state of things.

It has everything to do with religion, When the Solomonic dynasty spread the rulers were pressured to turn their populace to Christianity. It wasn’t that successful for the most part till the Menelik expansions but that’s how the language spread

As for the Muslim semetic languages (like Harari) I’m not sure though, the fact that some of the earliest Muslims in Eritrea speak a Cushtic language while others don’t leads me to believe they language shifted recently
