It's a mix of all three. The concept of nationalism is intersectional because people can have multiple identities at once. Islamic nationalism alone wouldn't work, it can be the most significant driving force in reforms but it can never be the only uniting factor.

This goes to show that despite AY and some Puntlander troops supporting Ethiopia, many Puntlanders were sympathetic to the cause of the ICU. Of course as Somalis they would be outraged seeing Christian foreigners invading Somalia and attacking Muslims, anyone would. This was also around the time ONLF had a resurgence since they condemned the Ethiopian invasion and promised that ENDF will never use Galbeed as a passage to Somalia. Islam really united all Somalis.

The ICU was a clannish outfit which was a succession of the old and dirty urur samaale, if puntlanders were supportive of the icu cause there would have been dissent from all segments of Puntland society, from the leadership down through the military to the common people. Don’t come around here with that qashin. We know even Islam isn’t safe from manipulation by mooryans.
