It was always obvious that the zayla/lughaya weren't realistic options. But assab which borders the afar region (which is loyal to the ethiopian state) and is only connected to the rest of eritrea by a single road seemed like the most logical option and it already has some infrastructure built from decades ago.
I honestly think the whole somaliland prot fiasco was a distraction to make it seem like he wasn't interested in assab. But I dont think afwerki ever really bought it

The survival of FGS depends on Ethiopian troops and the AUSSOM mission, too many of you treat FGS as a strong independent government. Don't forget the whole reason they exist is because Ethiopia wanted them in Xamar 2 decades ago.

Close, AUSSOM & Ethiopian troops are the last piece of defence against AS, which is currently strong enough to kill of these troops. Only thing stopping them is western air power and drones.
Nonetheless, Ethiopia is too broke to sustain troops on a large scale in Somalia. Nevermind the fact that FGS would be fully toppled, if they openly endorsed large scale co-operation with Ethiopia. No one would defend them anymore, AS would get Villa Somalia without a single bullet fired.
Man its gonna be an ugly day when AUSSOM pulls out, southerners can only pray that shabaab doesnt try anything crazy as long as HSM is in power
