So I'm observing my mother talk to her friend on the phone , the lady talks so much she doesn't let my mother have a chance to say anything, she would cut her off and then she start talking to her children in the background and then 5 minutes later remembers my mother on the phone....

I'm like hoyo turn the phone off this lady isn't giving you any attention she's rude lol
I think this is a mental illness or they have no awareness.

You’re crazy, constant chatting doesn’t mean a mental illness ((among somalis)). It may just mean that’s how the person is, or maybe that one day they had a lot to share who knows.

It's not a one day thing it's ALWAYS.
I know people like that. I don’t think it’s a mental illness.

It’s easy dealing with them, you do what they do to you. Be assertive, if you have something to say cut them off and say it. If they insist then you insist.

I think you're like this , you are very defensive.

I used to know a girl like this. worst part- she would call ME

she would talk to someone else while on the phone. the most irritating part is that after talking over me (no excuse me, hold on,- nothing!) she would get back with a pathetic, "I'm sorry abaayo what was that?" I'm sorry I don't repeat things for people who purposely don't listen... she was one of those people who was only interested in their side of the conversation, too.

I am more of a listener than talker, I don't mind if the other person did the heavy talking but if they over do it, I just occasionally hit em with 'ohh woow', 'that's interesting', 'i know what u mean'. Understanding social cues is very important because the person time should also be respected, don't keep em too long. :)

This is called narcissism , they think what they have to say is more Important then what the other person has to say.
Yes you are right. The lack of attention towards what the other person is saying is a behaviour i have seen 1000 times with Somalis. The way they rise their kids produces mental arrested development that give them poor social skills in the future and makes it difficult for them to complete with the rest of the world.

You would be surprised to find out that this mental illness is also why clans behave amoral towards each other and self reflection of such behaviour cannot happen.

Or just stop talking to them?
