In the past? Yea. In the future? No. After '91 and beyond, I think the children and grandchildren of say walahis (excluding myself) would have offspring that would be far removed from the deen and the wider Somali culture. Some can see it happening right now. We have Somalis who don't even know the language.

No. While Islam is an important part of our identity, Somalis nor the Somali language was born from it. Our pre-Islamic ancestors were pretty clearly Somali.
The modern Somali identity is tied to the relgion of Islam. This is a simple fact.
I can agree that there was Somali before Islam. Who likely practiced a monotheistic Cushite religion Waaq. But the difference between us is over a thousand years. Islam has ingrained itself into Somali culture and society that you cannot separate them.

Although I’m agnostic and not Muslim anymore technically ethnicity and religion are different no argument however things are different in real life socially if you aren’t Muslim you won’t be accepted as a Somali so yes Somali is a ethno-religious group I don’t know when we will change to accept non muslim Somalis but hopefully in the future we do

100% if Islam had been forced onto us, it wouldn't have worked, we're too proud to be subjugated, instead it spread naturally over time, and the men who spread it became saints and symbols of new dynasties.
And the men who were became the symbols of Islamic Somalia were themselves Somali men such as Aw-Barkhadle from 1,100 years ago who travelled and spread Islam to the peninsula and even other groups in the horn. He is praised by many oromo clans.
And he was claimed as an ancestor by several dynasties such as the Walashma who were the Rulers of Adal.
