Imru Al qais

I have read on this life story was hooked on his poems for a bit even tho I don’t speak Arabic . I heard from some redditor that he had a poem where he referenced a somali horse or area ( landscape or some sort ).

@Step a side You have any clue sxb

Yeah, he did it in two poems, one where he referenced the horses of the Barbar, the other where he referenced Barbar mercenaries who used to fight in his father's armies. In both cases, the word Barbar refers to the Somali coast, as is the traditional meaning of the word in middle eastern literature.

Damn had no idea Somalis were used as mercenaries . Walalo being we go far back what do you think is the likelihood some Somalis were companions of our prophet .

majority of the Sahabas obviously are not mentioned or known except for prominent ones

I would not say it was unrealistic for a couple of Somalis to find themselves in Middle Arabia. There were plenty of Somalis in southern Arabia due to sea trade. Some could have joined the Mainland trade enterprise. But not a significant number.

I have explained this before to not jump at any mention of ''Barbar'' because they could be talking about any group from other places when they mention barbar mercenaries and armies. It wasn't just applied to Somalia.
i made it clear before that ''Barbar'' was a greek word for non-greek speakers that was applied to a wide group of people and not just Somalis and later adopted by Muslim geographers.
Same with Habash which is just the adoption of the regional Aethiopia from the greeks. They could be talking about any group.

If they use the name ''Barbar'' you need to see if they attach/apply it to a specific identifiable location.

In the case of Umar Qays poem in particular you see arab medieval authors specifying Somalia, for example ibn Khaldun mentions it.
Besides them one finds the Barbara, of which the poet Imru'u-l-Qays speaks in his verses. Islam is nowadays very extended among them. They have a town on the Indian ocean called Mogadishu, which is often visited by Muslim merchants.

Mentions of horses would not be that suprising because Northern Somalia particularly nugaal-bari has been prime horse breedig grounds.

There are two horse breeds Western Galbeed and Bari-Nugaal
They are genetically horses but are seen as ponies because of their smaller size.

They are breed to be compact with thick sturdy builds, to be resilient in certain conditions.

why didn’t our ancestors try importing Arabian horses .

They did import Arabian horses & use them, as well as use local breeds and export local ones.

The Somali breeds actually descend from the Arabian from thousands of years ago but are bred to to be smaller and more compact.

@Almis wallahi I have to give it to you man I have not repeated a poem more than now . It hasn’t improved my Arabic learning but it gives me a visual of what the days of jahilliyah was like . Especially the beginning and him expressing his love for Khamr .

Another thing I realised about these poets they love their fair skinned girls and their camels .

Lol I dont blame you. You’re listening to one the of the Mualaqat. They’re the best known poems ever composed, Mualaqat basically means the hanging poems because Arabs hanged them on the walls of the Kaaba back in Jahiliah era. Once you get familiar with arabic poetry you will able to tell its from that era from the choice of words and the complexity of it. Praising and flirting with a lover was a common practice at that time. Imru al qays took it further and went on describing how he fornicated with other women.

Another great example is Antrah bin shaddad the owner of one of the Mualaqat. This warrior is considered the most bravest man ever lived in Jahiliyah. Im having trouble finding an accurate translated poem with a good narrator however check these ones you might like it.

I’ve heard of the hanging poems .Does that make it more authentic cause I heard a man say that no poem centuries back are accurate and have words added to them especially when passed orally.

Very interesting, the horn in those days must’ve had large fertile grazing areas for horses to have been this well kept/bred, horses aren’t as prized as they were long ago
