'It's not about somebody else. This election cycle is about us,' US congresswoman tells Muslim Americans

If Muslim-Americans want to become "visible" and elevate their issues on the decision-making table, they must participate in the upcoming presidential elections.

That was Congresswoman Ilhan Omar's message to worshippers at the Muslim Community Organization in Des Moines, Iowa.

Omar visited the mosque after Friday prayers, three days before the Democratic presidential primaries kick off with the Iowa caucuses.

The Muslim Community Organization is one of five mosques that will serve as caucus precincts in Iowa on Monday.

The Midwestern state has a sizeable Muslim minority population. It is also the home to one of the oldest mosques in the country.

Omar, who endorsed Bernie Sanders for president in October of last year, painted the senator from Vermont as a social justice warrior fighting for people on the margin of society as well as everyone else.

"When Bernie says us, we are included in that us," the congresswoman told the Muslim worshippers, alluding to the senator's campaign slogan, "Not me, us."

She said Sanders "seems so threatening to the status quo" because "Bernie sees everyone".

Muslim votes matter

Omar urged worshippers to participate in the caucuses, stressing that Muslims and immigrants are major stakeholders in the outcome of the elections.

"It's not about somebody else. This election cycle is about us. This election cycle is about your daughters who are in schools who are dealing with xenophobia, with racism, with Islamophobia," Omar said.

"You girls who don't feel comfortable showing up in their hijabs. This election cycle is about us. It's about our fathers who are working two jobs, three jobs, to put food on the table."

She added that the contest on Monday is also about parents who are worried about sending their children to another "endless war".

The congresswoman also gave a nod to Sanders' proposal for universal healthcare saying that the presidential race is about people with diabetes who are worried about how they can afford insulin.

"It's about young millennials. And what else was included in that list of 45 million people who are shackled with student debt and unable to access that American dream," Omar continued.

"So this election cycle isn't about you, it's about all of us... I am asking all of you to realise the importance of this election."

'We will make a difference'

Dressed in a fuchsia blazer over a black shirt with pink, round earrings dangling underneath her headdress, Omar's cameo at the basement of the mosque, where food was being served after Friday prayers, was as vivid as her outfit.

The attendees quickly gathered around her, approaching her to take selfies and shake her hand.

One of two Muslim congresswomen, Omar has reached celebrity status in the Muslim-American community despite allegations that she had made anti-semitic comments stemming from her criticism of Israel.

Omar's fellow Muslim in Congress, Rashida Tlaib, who is equally revered by many Muslims in the US, has also endorsed Sanders, and she is campaigning for him in Iowa this weekend as well.

Sanders received another boost from the Muslim-American community with the Muslim Caucus of America, an advocacy group and civic organisation, endorsing his campaign.

Arab- and Muslim- American advocates often cite Sanders' views on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, his non-interventionist foreign policies and populist policies as reasons for supporting him.

On Friday, Ako Abdul-Samad, a Muslim Iowa state representative, also came out in support of Sanders.

"Muslims, we will make a difference in this race; we will make a difference across this country," Abdul-Samad, standing next to Omar, said at the mosque on Friday.

"And plus, we need to show our values. We need to show that we are involved in the political process that at times tries to leave us out, and we cannot be kept out of that process because we have just as much to lose or to win as anyone else."

Truly, the way she protects our values from the bed of her Jewish lover is amazing
I don’t trust white liberal Jews. I get a serious Jim Jones vibe from Bernie. Also, Omar should be against big government. The main reason why the people of Somalia can’t raise out poverty is because of a corrupt government and foreign intervention. Could you imagine Bernie Sanders in Somalia ? Would he be taken seriously? If she’s so anti-white, why didn’t she back a black candidate and have an an affair with a white man ?

What I admire about Ilhan Omar is how she courageously supports Muslim values and causes.
I don’t know. She comes as a part time Muslim, to me. How can she speak out against Israel and support a Jewish man ? I’m pretty sure feminism, especially third wave feminism isn’t compatible with Islam.

What’s it like being on the spectrum?

I do like that fact that Ilhan Omar spoke out about Obama. Every other democrat was too weak to correct someone’s shitty decisions because they’re from the same party. I like the fact she’s blunt and direction. I admire her conviction in her beliefs, even though I don’t agree with her. I do agree with her about Israel and Sharia Law is needed with some of these degenerates here. But I hate that she shits on America and Somalis are the last people on this planet to criticize someone else for being racist or “insert ism “ here.

I’m looking at the bigger scheme of things, sure Ilhan needs to iron out somethings but she broke the glass ceiling for future Muslim politicians to come. You can outwardly express your faith and still be a US politician.
We need practicing Muslim politicians who make decisions based on what’s good for Islam in America.

We need politicians on both sides . Have Somali division for Democrats, Republicans and independent. Either way, big government is cancer to the Somali people. No one likes us or really cares about us outside of votes.

Why would we want to divide the power of the Somali vote ? We are 150,000 at most in the US.

I can see what you mean when you preach self reliance and doing things on your own without big government. Why do you mistrust white liberal Jews? Because they're jewish or liberal.
Btw I dont support bernie or any particular liberal. I might vote liberarian green or even Trump.

Im just trying to see your lohic on white liberal jews

Because 99.9 percent of Democrats’ values don’t mix well with traditional Somali culture. We should have leverage in every faction and using their to build our political platform. Trust me, I’ve been down the liberal and neoconservatives lane, both don’t f*ck with us like that.

A majority of socialists/communists are wealthy white Jews. https://mises.org/library/stateless-somalia-and-loving-it . The main reason why Siad Barre failed was forced integration with qabils. How is a group of people with a known reputation of having a superiority complex going to be down for making all of them equal ?

Somali culture is closer to traditional republican values. And yet somalis run after the democrat politicians and their garbage.

Man i would take george bush and compassionate conservatism over that qashin ilhan omar

Gen Afweyne Barré failed because of socialism that favored some clans over others. Eventually the Muqdisho region native clans evicted him.
We can't quantify what what portion of wealthy commies are are Jews. If you're against communism, don't get disttacted with antisemitic tropes

Yeah, but they’re too eager to “help” blacks. I feel iffy by it. I don’t trust white liberals at all. I’m probably biased because some Jews are pushing from reparations from North Africa and the Middle East. I think Egyptians didn’t enslaved the Hebrews. Outside of the biblical story, there’s no real evidence of Egyptians doing that.
