I've been thinking about this lately, is their a turning point, moment or individual that led the country down the road to eventual civil war? Would preventing the Ogaden war save the country, assassinating Siad Barre or is any action taken futile. What would you guys do to prevent the breakdown in this theoretical situation.

Hmm. I heard that the final straw that broke the camel's back was Siad Barre defending and protecting a Catholic Bishop? So maybe if that wouldn't have happened then the war would have been delayed, but I don't know if it would've been prevented. Hard question, tbh; it requires the input of somebody with an extensive knowledge about the war and its causes and I'm afraid I'm not that person.

If we really want to dig at the heart of the problem, maybe we can acknowledge that if somebody stopped Siad Barre from usurping his position and leading a lengthy miltary dictatorship, then perhaps there wouldn't have been the attacks on the minority clans that led to their uprising.

Camels are the only reason why north-central Somalia is even inhabitable. I don't know why people have this impression that nomads resist agriculture and farming, that's not the case. If the land is fertile and the region receives high rainfall, then nomads always transition to farming across the world. But if the land doesn't receive adequate rainfall, then being a nomad is the most productive use of the land.
