The family can choose. A lot of the time the family of the victim has nothing and he may have left children behind. Nothing will bring their father back. So they choose to be compensated to take care of his kids.

But it has to be their choice and this is where we have with Somalis. Its really not a choice but the weaker family being bullied and bunch of odoyaal getting involved. When my uncle killed a man the odoyaal in our family were convinced he wouldnt be locked up

In developed countries, the state has programs that support families of murder victims such as covering:

• Funeral expenses
• Lost wages
• Counselling
• Health care (if not already provided in the country.)
• Etc.
