I'm not suprised by the ending.
If you start your relationship on hard times and stick through that doesn't necessitate that the other party will stay upon reaching some rewarding milestone. That's cute and would make for a nice tale to tell others in old age (if you make it) but it's too much of a gamble.

If you have future dreams of getting married (not everyone does or cares if they don't), you should look for a 27-30 year old man asap to get the sexy, financially well off guy as you have more access to them now.
