If in 1977 the Somali army had marched straight to Addis Ababa and avoided taking all the minor towns in Galbeed would they win?

If they went straight down the Awash Valley. How successful would that be?

? If Addis was placed under threat Ethiopia would sue for peace.

You need supply lines, places for soldiers to rest, access to medical facilities.

That’s before I get into military strategy and the importance of taking towns one by one.

That war was unwise. Russia said they weren’t backing us and barre thought it was bluff. America also didn’t care enough to step in since there was no oil or strategic importance to either country. Even if we took Addis would just have gotten way harsher response from Russia. They did enough damage to make us withdraw but Russia and Ethiopia could have very easily invaded rest of country when we were routed in somali galbeed. If it was strictly Somalia vs Ethiopia we might have won since Ethiopia was so weakens from civil war. But doubt we would have held all that territory long term when Russia and west cut support . We just didn’t have manufacturing and wealth to support something like this

launching attacks from the semi-arid/arid parts of galbeed was easy because of the flat terrain. it was easier to send supplies.

Dwelling on the past and what we could have or should have done is useless. Ethiopia has galbeed and it's gonna be that way for a long time.

The awash valley is not a natural route. If you want to capture Addis Ababa, invading from the South through the rift valley is better. That is what the British and their colonial soldiers have done when they expelled the Italians from Ethiopia during WWII. Somalis couldn't even Capture Diredawa, Addis and most of Ethiopia above 1,400m in elv was out of our reach.

Can you tell us a bit more i'm interested.
A clan called Howrarsame were falsely framed for the murder of the Darood king and were forced to pay a hefty mag. They scattered all over the Somali peninsular and Ethiopia and founded new towns around shewa like Finfine/Adis Ababa. Later the Oromo expansion took place and they were fully absorbed.

Is there some historical source for this?

There were Somali military units stationed on the other side of Adis, ready to sack the city, when the WARSO alliance ordered Somalia to pull back. That was after Somalia was offered to keep Somali Galbeed, and halt the war, but they refused only to be forced to retreat. More soldiers died on the retreat than the war.

You should look at E. Honecker's account of the negotiations along with declassified KGB documents on the war.
