I think the terms 'progressive' and 'conservative' are still functional. And the other two axis of the political compass (authoritative versus anarchical) are still relevant. But it's over simplified and people differ on beliefs based on economic, domestic, international and social categories.Might as well add my 2 cents to this. Not to derail but I think left and right are both outdatedthere should be a new system with new ideas and it should be called Up and Down

It’s clear that fascism and far right ideology is taking over the western world, in particular the US.
The problem simply lies in the fact that leftism which is the antithesis of right wing hatred is completely dead in the west. It’s been infected.
I was invited to the communist party chapter at my university. And they’re talking about made up things like fatphobia and “polyamorous queer” relationships. Leftism has been so corrupted by identity politics and khaniisnimo it makes me sick. Any communist leader would have had these people put in prison or something.
The worst part is as black Muslims in the west, these are the closest things we have to allies. Since the other side simply wants us gone.
Trans activism, Veganism and the general extreme alphabet business pretty much neutered the left-wing. I'm not one for conspiracy theories but I sometimes seriously feel like it's something of a deliberate psy-op by corporate and government entities. Distract people with these nonsensical social issues so that they ignore the real issues:

It's actually extremely sad how most people can't even properly define Socialism, Communism, Anarchism or many of the old far-left movements that could help emancipate them from a Capitalist world out of control or how most of them think being dependent on the pharmaceutical industry for supplements and a global supply-chain dependent on mono-culture fields (veganism) is preferable to being a lone homesteader who keeps some cattle, goats and chickens.
And the grifting you can’t scream about oligarchy when you Collect money from big pharmaceutical companies and made the bush tax cuts permanentIf the left dropped the qaniis agenda they'd win every possible election quite comfortably.
I'm currently reading Lee Kuan Yew's book from Third World to First, and it's very interesting. He's a very pragmatic man and knows when to stand by his statements and when not. For example, after the two Indonesians were sentenced to death for crimes in Singapore, he placed flower wreaths on their graves in Indonesia so that Singapore and Indonesia could normalize ties.If i weren't Somali id want to be Singaporean

he is a big believer in having the smartest people lead and paying those people a good salary, so he tied the salaries for judges, MPs, and other government officials to those in the private sector. He's a genuine technocrat, and while I'm a staunch leftist, he's someone I genuinely respect for sticking to his morals and making Singapore thrive under those. Here's a quote that I found particularly brilliant: "I was determined to avoid placing the burden of the present generation's welfare costs onto the next generation." That's why Singapore doesn't use the usual system of pensions where the taxes of the current workers are put into a pool of pensions, but makes it mandatory to have a certain amount of their wages be set aside in a pension account, this account also being able to be used for the lump sum that is needed to buy a house, which is why singapore is one of the societies with the biggest private home ownership rate. I could ramble on about him but I'll end it here.
i think hong kong is a geniune case of stagnation, the role they played in the world economy, that's is the place that connects china to the world is declining a lot thanks to the fact that china is not as closed as it used to be in the 90s, so many businesses just cut out the middle man so to speak and go to china. This is also exacerbated by the fact that, as Hong Kong integrates more and more politically with China, the unique charm that Hong Kong has to investors has been lost. Also not helped by the asian financial crisis in the 90s, which has created a lot of long-term crises for the asian tigers, which are still felt today. the asian financial crisis is also unironically one of the things that strengthened Singapore against the other economies of Asia, because of how little corruption there was and the stringent requirements of banks in Singapore they could weather the storm and come up on top.Hong Kong was the dream in the 90s although its free market neoliberal experiment has gone haywire in recent years
