I kind of feel sorry for Abiy Ahmed

Try not to focus on Ethiopia's previous leaders, or their previous government's policies in the horn of Africa. This thread is really about Abiy Ahmed as a person you can hate on Ethiopia as a country but you really can't hate on this guy. He really wanted to bring peace and prosperity to the horn of Africa and to the other surrounding countries which border Ethiopia like Sudan and South Sudan. He resolved ongoing tensions with Eritrea, he brokered peace deals in South Sudan and Sudan. He represented Ethiopia's ethnic and religious diversity, with him being half Oromo and Amhara as well as growing up in both a Muslim and Christian household. I would go as far as saying he was like the ''Obama of East Africa''.

Now a year later, his country is facing potential war with Egypt and Sudan. There are ethnic tensions brewing in his country, he really doesn't deserve all of this shit right now. Abiy Ahmed is a good man, and his record proves that.

Bad things happen to good ppl. That's the nature of this world.

Only time will tell how things will progress in ethiopia.

I agree to some extent and I also feel bad for him. However, I want to add some light about the other side of Abiy. Because he is such a good person, many including his opponents underestimate him. All people who are working or worked with him in the past tell you, he is a very good strategists and workaholic and a very determined guy. I think his opponents make a big mistake in underestimating him. In my view even though he is confronted with so many challenges, he is also a guy who is determined to overcome any challenge by systematically planning and executing a road map strictly and with hard work.

How come oromos are still suffering under his leadership? I thought he'd make certain changes to the country to aid oromos.

So far he has only pit them against somalis, why doesn't he do things like making oromo a national language or something. Considering his own father is oromo, that makes habeshas only his reer abti.

I hope he succeeds in preventing ethnic tension in his country, we have to move away from these debilitating old conflicts and ways of thinking. As a person trained in the art of positivity, it's almost second nature for me to pick up on his good intention and aura of good energy . let us all welcome forward thinking and dialogue :)

"Oromos are suffering" is a huge generalization and mentality that is inherited from the past. In reality, Oromos are not suffering if you look at it objectively. The only area that is still "suffering" is wester oromia where there is still a low level insurgency and the army is operating but other than that it is mostly in their head. Just to give you a practical example. Prior to Abiy, Oromia was ruled by TPLF tigreans in the background. Now, no other ethnic group is ruling Oromia. Only oromos and and oromos alone are ruling Oromia without any other ethnic interfering. In the federal government, there there is not other ethnic group now that has more power than oromos including the PM position. The oromia administration is facilitating loans to the youth so that they become entrepreneurs, giving them land to do business etc. Instead of using this opportunity to dominate ethiopia both polticaly and economically, their delusional elites are leading the youth to disarray. Jawar & co. did nothing/nada/zero in the past 2 years to help the youth get job and participate in the economy, only Abiy's party was doing this.
Making Afaan Oromo to become national language is already decided by Abiy's party. Not only Afaan Oromo but also Tigrigna, Somali and Afar. A separate team is established to study and implement this issue. That is a done deal but you can't make it overnight because of the technicality and because you need to change the constitution. Abiy, since he is not yet elected, doesn't want to change the constitution (just to help his language to become federal). Sorry to say but oromo elites are making this huge ethnic group a big cry baby instead of using opportunities to dominate. Even smaller ethnic groups who have little political and economical opportunities are doing well. But oromo elites are a big fail if you ask me.

I can sort of believe this. I find it hard to believe the largest ethnic group in ethiopia can be oppressed so easily.

I remember my brother telling me they were at like 34% of the country? But yeah since they have liberty they should have been running the country easily. With their large numbers politicians will be forced to appease them in order to buy their votes. They can also vote for their favourite politicians.

I said oromos are suffering because that's what I've been seeing in the media, also due to the fact that oromos are irrelevant outside of horn of africa. If you're not somali, ethiopian, or eritrean in the diaspora, most likely you don't even know oromos exist.

First thing people think of in ethiopia are habesha.

Oh and for the future, try spacing your paragraphs. It's hard to read when the font is so small and it's in one huge bulk. At least small little paragraphs can serve as bookmarks so you don't get lost.

That large head Oromo thought he was slick getting handed that Nobel Prize little did he know that in the midst of his ethnic base contained backward savages
