During my bussiness trip to Kampala in 2016
I happened to visit a relative living in Kigali and stayed there 4 days
My first impression of the country despite it was a short period
The city is so fucking neat and clean the tarmacs and pavements look so modern making Joburg look like a shitehole
I transversed the entire capital it’s not that big from end to end and didn’t see a single piece of trash dumped by the road side
The nightlife was amazing I had a fun time ,
Rwandans seemed to be more Social than South Africans
They spoke English fluently despite being a Belgian colony previously
the atmosphere was a parallel to where Im from
You can wonder late at night without worrying about getting hijacked or your body slashed with machetes
Kigali changed my perception of Africa and I've forgotten all about the dusty Kampala streets I was walking few days before
The museum vividly paints the picture of what happened during the 90 days of the genocide, and even takes you back to the events leading up to this atrocious event.
The extent of intolerance depicted to have existed then felt outrageously recent!
It was a lot to take in.
Fortunately, outside of the museum, I didn’t feel any of this vibe or experience any outright display of hatred or bitterness between the Hutus and Tutsis.
In Somalia for instance, despite the tragedies that took place and put us to where we are today we’ve never, as a country at least ever experienced anything half of this magnitude, yet the intolerance between qabiils are just ridiculously outrageous.
We should learn alot from this country
