WTF??? How did they place the region that was ran over by tiny Belgium over east Africans????

It’s hard trying to study actual verifiable history when writing hasn’t been mainstream really till the futuh al Habesh. Even the Semitic scripts were limited to some regions in Eritrea and not for the common folk

Also, it gets annoying as f*ck when every other ethnicity is seemingly descendant from some Semitic tribe that came from above and settled with their “uncivilised ancestors”. Literally nearly every tribe in this region for some reason has some bullshit ancestral lineage that doesn’t correlate with genetics. Making their oral history very unreliable

Somalis and Habesha have actual Arabian ancestry though

Somalis around 4-8% and Habesha around 25-32%

From what I can tell that’s just due to proximity and essentially all formerly agaws have this admixture due to waves of migration , even the Ethiopian Jews. Somalis less so due to the bottlenecking happening in the arid Somali climate. The Islamic clan and Solomonic lineages are political manifestations

Yes but I don’t get your point, this doesn’t change the fact that Habesha and Somalis do have real Arabian ancestry so the Semitic lineages are real and not fabricated for the most part.

I agree

Ain’t no way they put Kanem over the Horn. When Al-Yaqubi was writing down history of the Bilad al-Sudan (West Africa), he specifically mentions that they had no towns or cities or any urbanism and lived in reed huts.

Sahel empires like Mali and Songhai are cool to read about but in my opinion it’s not on the level of Axum, Zagwe/Solomonic, and the Muslim sultanates in the region

I agree but Solomonic dynasty was trash tbh.

I think it’s an impressive feat that the Amhara kings were able to dominate so much of Ethiopia and Eritrea, the highlands are an extremely rugged mountainous terrain which is really difficult to manoeuvre, and most maps don’t really do the size of Africa justice

But other than that they really didn’t achieve much lol.

Europeans created myths and legends about Ethiopia, they had this idea in there head that Ethiopia was this really old powerful Christian nation with large cities and that they are protectors of Christianity in a sea of Islam, this manifested into the Prester John narrative.
But when Europeans actually visited Ethiopia they were often disappointed because all they saw was peasant villagers, no urban centres, no cities except for some abandoned Axumite ones.

The thing is, the Europeans created this narrative purely based on what they had read about the Axumite empire from past travellers who described it as a large powerful empire with urban cities, massive palaces, very wealthy and a world superpower so they expected this during the medieval era when the Axumite empire had been long gone.

Solomonic dynasty is pretty rubbish tbh, they made some interesting developments in Orthodox Christianity in Ethiopia/Eritrea and they conquered a lot of land, other than that they didn’t do anything noteworthy. There prestige is PURELY due to the association with Axum, I’m not even joking they were truly a useless dynasty who rode off of Axums coattails.

Before the colonial era Abyssinia was mostly stationed in the highlands and nothing more, only rarely coming down the mountains to war with neighboring Muslims. So the map isn’t anywhere close to accurate as they didn’t hold East, south, and parts of western Ethiopia.

Myths like Prestor John were only attributed to them centuries after it first popped up. Prestor John was originally an isolated Christian king in India before the Portuguese found the ethiopians.

I’m well aware, I posted that map simply to show how large Ethiopia is relative to Europe, it’s literally the size of Central Europe with a significantly more difficult geography to manoeuvre, I couldn’t post a map of Ethiopia without Ogaden and the South as that’s simply not an option on that website lol.

This isn’t even true and even if it was it’s completely irrelevant I don’t know why you brought this up it doesn’t change what I said in any capacity.

Some Europeans were identifying Prester John with Ethiopians in the 13/14th century, this is before Portuguese contact so your wrong.
Ethiopians sent diplomats to Italy in 1402, and they were said to have come from the Kingdom of Prester John

I'm content with that. It's nice to maintain an aura of mystery. Keeps people on their toes, you know?

We have more information about Mali and Songhai's army composition and size compared to Horner armies but they would probably still lose tbh. Horner armies were the first to adopt gunpowder weapons in SSA and the Songhai got beaten badly by the Moroccans at Tondibi due to the latter's access to guns and cannons.

Adal and Axum were easily larger and more powerful than any of those regions, only rivals would be the Islamic West African states
Axum and Adal were the Rome and Ottomans of the continent. How can you place any region above these states?

Ngl they were pretty big empire’s who were far more richer than us. Also they had Timbuktu which was one of africas greatest learning centres.

I would say personally it is a tie if not leaning a bit towards them.

I have a bias towards horn Africa but we can’t just undermine how great the muslim west Africa states were.
