I believe everything meaningful has a solid foundation were a new life can be build. Without a solid foundation we cannot build anything that will last and endure. I like the example of Japan were zen Buddhism become a unifying force that help moderate Japanese behaviour. A code or system that allowed people to express themselves and at the same time reminded to serve a national culture. We Somalis have Islam but this religion does not moderate the violent tendencies of the Somali brain. We are quick to take offence over the smallest thing. Even when we are looking for a solution we somehow create more problems.
I believe our behaviour is link to our unstable brain activity were we believe every though that comes in our heads. Islam has nothing to say about this of course. But Zen teachers talk about calming the mind so you can achieve clarity of thought. A brain that is untrained will produce a society that is dysfunctional and chaotic. The West has had science to help them move forward and this is a positive step but they have not yet tamed the mind and this dysfunction can be see if you watch the news.
We Somalis are in desperate need of something that can manage this dysfunctional brain activity that creates suffering for not only yourself but other people. Watch the thoughts that come into your head and see that you are not those hostile thoughts nor are you those hateful emotions. The essence of meditation is to come to the understand that what comes and goes is not you. So who are you? The one that sees that. We need to bring balance into our life and return sanity to it. Islam has yet to provide a solution that can help us move forward in a positive way. So if the old way is not working try something new. I know fear is a big part of my people stay stagnate, but if we don't move on we will perish.
I believe once this is practise our behaviour will transform into something more productive were we are no longer wasting energy on useless things.
