Some words spelled with the letter "H" in English change to a letter "X" in Somali depending on how the word is pronounced

Essentially, words like hilib (meat), Hamar (i.e., Mogadishu) or haafad (neighbourhood) are spelt as xilib, Xamar, and xafad respectively in the Somali Latin script

Making it more confusing is the fact that other words beginning with "H" in English are still spelt with an "H" in Somali. Examples are Hargeisa (the city) or Hawiye (the clan)

The difference essentially comes down to if you slightly close off your vocal tract using the muscles in your throat (articulation) when pronouncing the "H" sound:

i) If you do, it's spelt with an "X" - this is an example of voiceless pharyngeal fricative - you use your throat muscle to pronounce the "H"

ii) If you don't, it's spelt with an "H" - this is an example of voiceless glottal fricative - you use your tongue to pronounce the "H"
