How the IMF/World Bank destroyed the Somali economy in the 80s

Somalia's collapse was largely due to Siyad Barre siding with the USSR during the Cold War, then launching a war they warned him against. After the USSR turned on him, he turned to the US for help, which only made things even worse.

Basically, Somalia was wrecked militarily by the USSR and economically by the West. Barre's foreign policy choices were pretty bad

Neoliberalism only works if you live in a major global financial center like London , New York , Hong Kong etc

In order for a nation to become fully developed you have to build inclusive political institutions and inclusive economic institutions and that takes time

Rare earths are the natural gas of the 21st century these poor nations with large debt burdens in Africa will be forced to give up there minerals like Congo is going now

The 2024 nobel prize of economy said something similar, rich countries dont't make good institutions it's good insitutions that make rich countries
